Out of fear over bacterial difficulties, I was not about to drink any of the cocoa stuff at the Octolán de Morelos market near Oaxaca. No way, Jose. Oh, but I drink it all the time, says our guide. I turned around and stared him in the eyes until he rethought that sentence. Hey, it was probably not contaminated, but the problem with drinking foreign water -- and I don't care where you are, Montezuma's Revenge can happen even in Oregon -- is your gut is not used to foreign bacteria.
Besides, the stuff looked terrible. Sort of a pasty-white watery mixture with things floating in it, and it's suppposed to be cocoa. I'm sure it's delicious because appearance means little but I still refused to drink it. Now, grasshoppers, that's another story.
That parrot in the photo is named Tomas, and he lives at the shop where his owners create and sell black pottery. You can see all of the photographs and read more about this story in my personal blog today at this link: Photos Selling Sacramento Real Estate on Vacation in Oaxaca.
