The patient is your business, and it’s time for a physcal exam
One of our wise Active Rain members, Barry Owen, wrote a post this morning full of wisdom on two different fronts, personal and business. We need to take preventive measures both with ourselves and with our businesses.
Be sure to go to Barry's post to leave comments.
Most people visit their Doctors annually for a Physical Exam.
Do you?
We do this primarily for preventative reasons, because we know that we can be VERY sick without even knowing.
Sadly, I lost a friend to a massive heart attack this week. Earlier this year, another friend mysteriously passed out and died – He’d unknowingly had “walking pneumonia” for weeks and finally succumbed . . . Almost daily, I hear of someone learning of being afflicted with varying stages of cancer . . .
Very few people enjoy going to the Doctor. I avoid Doctors like the plague, BUT I do go every year for my Physical exam because I know that it’s critical to catch major illness as early as possible. The earlier we catch it, the higher the probability that we will survive the affliction and live a longer life.
When you go to the Doctor, what are the “Vital Signs” that are measured before you see the Dr?
- Temperature
- Pulse
- Blood Pressure
- Height
- Weight
- Cholesterol
and they usually take a couple of vials of blood to check for anomalies.
These tests are measuring levels and comparing them to “average” levels for humans of similar age . . . and comparing them to our results from prior years.
The results of these tests help the Dr advise the patient to adjust eating/exercise/work habits to preemptively attack any risk of poor health.
If there are any MAJOR red flags, the Doctor can address them immediately.
So . . .
Have you considered the most important “vital signs” in your business?
What are the “Metrics” you should be tracking as a quick indicator of how you are doing relative to your goals?
Could your business be hemorrhaging time, energy, and money on inefficient processes and bad habits?
How much more profitable could your business be if you were to preemptively identify your operational short-comings periodically and adjust your business practices accordingly?
With healthier business practices, how much more quickly could you achieve your goals?
