The patient is your business, and it’s time for a physcal exam

One of our wise Active Rain members, Barry Owen, wrote a post this morning full of wisdom on two different fronts, personal and business. We need to take preventive measures both with ourselves and with our businesses.

Most people visit their Doctors annually for a Physical Exam.

Do you?

We do this primarily for preventative reasons, because we know that we can be VERY sick without even knowing.

Sadly, I lost a friend to a massive heart attack this week. Earlier this year, another friend mysteriously passed out and died – He’d unknowingly had “walking pneumonia” for weeks and finally succumbed . . . Almost daily, I hear of someone learning of being afflicted with varying stages of cancer . . .

Very few people enjoy going to the Doctor. I avoid Doctors like the plague, BUT I do go every year for my Physical exam because I know that it’s critical to catch major illness as early as possible. The earlier we catch it, the higher the probability that we will survive the affliction and live a longer life.

When you go to the Doctor, what are the “Vital Signs” that are measured before you see the Dr?

  • Temperature
  • Pulse
  • Blood Pressure
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Cholesterol

and they usually take a couple of vials of blood to check for anomalies.

These tests are measuring levels and comparing them to “average” levels for humans of similar age . . . and comparing them to our results from prior years.

The results of these tests help the Dr advise the patient to adjust eating/exercise/work habits to preemptively attack any risk of poor health.

If there are any MAJOR red flags, the Doctor can address them immediately.

So . . .

Have you considered the most important “vital signs” in your business?

What are the “Metrics” you should be tracking as a quick indicator of how you are doing relative to your goals?

Could your business be hemorrhaging time, energy, and money on inefficient processes and bad habits?

How much more profitable could your business be if you were to preemptively identify your operational short-comings periodically and adjust your business practices accordingly?

With healthier business practices, how much more quickly could you achieve your goals?

Good morning Lottie. Was never a fan of the annual check-up intil this year when a medical issue changed my mind. Have always liked a business check-up on a consistent basis. Enjoy your day!

Barry Owen - I'm happy to share your wisdom - the more eyes on this one, the better.

Kristin Johnston - REALTOR® - I don't re-blog as often as I should, but this post was a no-brainer for me. Important on 2 levels.

Hi Wayne Martin - I'm glad to hear you had your annual physical; catching small problems before they become large becomes more and more important with every passing year.

Thanks, Myrl Jeffcoat - I'm having an amazing week; capping off all the craziness, I just signed up for a 3-day silent yoga retreat!  Sanity will return.

Hi Anna Banana Kruchten - I really like reading Barry's posts - always thought provoking with a great mindset. Happy Spring to you!

I like the idea of a "silent" yoga retreat.  I swim laps, but often when I get in the pool, other people there want to talk.  Have you ever tried swimming laps and swimming at the same time?

Uhhh.... Myrl Jeffcoat - do you mean swiming and talking at the same time? I think that would be my recipe for drowning!  I do treasure alone time. I've gone to this retreat twice before; it works wonders. Not only do we not talk for 2-1/2 days, we don't make eye contact, don't smile, nothing. It's our own time.
