A Garden With a Mind of its Own

By
Real Estate Agent

Back in May, I planted 8 tomato plants of various varieties, and a few Zucchini and Yellow Straight-Neck squash seeds.

While my tomatoes are over 6 feet tall already, and producing nicely, it has been the squash which have absolutely amazed me.  I had no idea they would completely overgrow an area of my garden that has Lantana growing.  They are currently four and a half feet tall, and are averaging about a half dozen good-sized squash each morning.

I love slicing them, steaming them to Al dente, adding butter, Parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, cracked pepper and a little garlic salt...Delicious!

From the looks of this it would be a great idea to hang around at your house.

Man, Myrl, that's some squash garden. This is what all of that rain in Sacramento produced this year. Overgrown gardens! Mine is the same!!

I bet you can't eat them fast enough. But them you have family you can pawn them off on. Beats dropping a pile of squash on somebody's doorstep, ringing the bell and running away.

The odd thing is that I didn't plant the seeds until May.  Most of the rains were done by then.  You're right, my family and neighbors are eating a whole lot of squash these days.

@Good Morning Myrl Jeffcoat!

WOW! Your garden looks good and healthy and it's producing great vegetables too!

Back when I lived in Chicago, there was an Italian family that visited frequently. We'd go to the woods and she'd pick plants from the forest; then go to my house and make fried Garduna. My father said it was wild rhubarb but the lady disagreed. Nontheless, she made it exactly the way Sandy Padula and Norm Padula, JD, GRI NMLS#1483386 described. It did taste good!

Once again, congratulations on getting good results in your garden. They are really BIG plants. Isn't it amazing what rain and climate change will do! I hope you have an abundance of tomatoes, squash, and zucchini too! Happy eating!!!

There are so many ways to prepare zucchini and yellow squash it never gets old. With those tomatoes, you have a great start to making one of my favorites, Ratatouille.
