An unwanted real estate call…

By

This story is so ridiculous, I have to share it. I know that no one here would do anything so outrageous.

To give you some background – Somehow my husband’s name and our unlisted number (family only) got on a list of people who invest millions. I have no idea how, since we are not millionaires.

Every few months he starts getting calls from sales people. At first it was all about oil wells. Now it’s all sorts of things. On average, there’s one call every day and it goes on for a couple of weeks before I get break from them.

They ask if he’s in and I say no and ask if there’s a message. Most just hang up. A few talk with me and I explain that we are NOT big time investors. Sometimes they chat for a few minutes and promise to take our name off the list.

Yesterday it was a real estate agent. The one who was apparently raised by apes.

When I said Carl wasn’t here he asked if I was Mrs. Cliff. When I said yes he asked how was I today andSTRESSED CRAZY LADY called me something offensive. I don’t remember if it was honey-baby or sweetie-darling – but something like that. My hackles were up!

He proceeded to tell me that he was calling to tell Carl about this wonderful real estate investment opportunity that he knew we’d be interested in because they had spoken with him before. I said “No, we don’t invest and that he hadn't talked with Carl before."

I knew they hadn’t talked with Carl before because I don’t even hand him the phone for solicitation calls.

He said he understood, but since they’d talked with Carl before they knew he’d be interested in this.

Meanwhile, his sentences were punctuated  calling me “hon.” (Grrr…)

I said “Did you hear me? I said we don’t invest.”

And then he started arguing with me!

I was trying to speak and he was talking right over me, so finally I yelled something and hung up on him.

Can you even feature arguing with a prospect?

That would be like someone telling you they don’t want to buy or sell a house and you saying “Yes you do. I know you do! So you have to listen to me.”

That’s the second time this month someone has called to sell me something and argued when I said no. The other was that character who always says he’s the one who fixed my computer last time.

I find this level of stupidity unbelievable.

Anna Banana Kruchten, CRS - It's so stupid. If there had been any chance of you becoming a customer, they ended it the minute they started to argue with you.

Marte Cliff, these calls are beyond annoying. Whether trying to sell a million dollar property or just soliciting for listings, cold calls are just annoying and a huge time waster.

Beth Atalay - Yes, they are a waste of time, but unless they made me run from outdoors or wake me up at 5 a.m. (which one did) I don't get too annoyed when they just hang up. Arguing is a whole different matter.

Hi Marte - My patience with these guys ran out long ago - I don't even engage, but as soon as I figure out that it's a sales call, I just hang up. I know it's rude, but somehow I'm not losing any sleep over it. Have a great weekend!

Dick Greenberg - That's what I usually do too. Maybe if I answered them more often I'd run into even more idiots who want to argue about it.

I do try to be careful how I answer calls from strangers, because a lot of them turn out to be customers.

It always amazes me when callers decide it's good practice to begin arguing.  It makes no sense.

Myrl Jeffcoat - It must be that it feeds their egos, because it sure isn't going to feed their bank accounts.

I think your post provides a very clear example of what NOT to do on sales calls, Marte Cliff ...

As a reminder to us all, I Feature it here on Bananatude!  Hopefully it provides a blueprint to avoid ...

Thanks Gene Mundt, IL/WI Mortgage Originator - FHA/VA/Conv/Jumbo/Portfolio/Refi - I really don't think anyone who is smart enough to be on Active Rain would do it - but I guess you never know!

Marte- I get it that people make these cold calls but when someone says no, then they should say "thank you" and hang up. I'm doing what Dick Greenberg does now. I say no thanks and hang up. That's all they get from me.

Kathy Streib - These callers all ask for my husband. When I say he's not in and do they want to leave a message, most hang up without another word. Some say they'll call later (but don't) and some tell me it's OK because they have his cell number (which doesn't exist).

With the exception of that one idiot, the few who ask if I'm Mrs. Cliff have been nice and have told me they'd take his name off the list.

Marte Cliff I would have to resort to letting the machine pick it up. How annoying that must be. I always try to be courteous, every one has a job to do, or that's my attitude when the calls begin, but when they start to get rude and argue, then ...CLICK. I tried, you were a jerk, good luck on the next one. Who trains these people??

Colleen Fischesser Northwest Property Shop - I don't have caller ID on that line, so if I'm here, I answer. The only ones who are supposed to have that number are our two sons and about 2 or 3 close friends.

How that company that keeps selling our name to investment places got the number is beyond me. I do use that line to call out, but it's unlisted, so the number is blocked.

These frustrating sales people.  They have a tough job, but lying to your face - how awful! You had more patience than I would have had just to speak with him.
