Long Island Bad Weather Home Showings

By
Real Estate Agent with The Top Team @ Charles Rutenberg Realty 255 Executive Dr, Plainview NY 11803

Have you ever  been to listings where the homeowner requests "shoes off". Okay, we can understand this in bad weather, although if we were selling our home, we wouldn't want anyone's dirty feet walking on our clean floors (even those booties tend to sweat).

I must say that we've seen buyers take off their shoes and get hurt by small toys lying around, cold basements that buyers didn't look at, someone who slipped while walking with those plastic booties on, and what dogs have left around...well we won't go there!

I remember last winter when we had lots of snow and the homeowner asked that we take our boots off before entering. Sure, we'll take off our boots, but where can we sit to help us remove them?

"Take them off by the front door" she replied.

Okay I said, would you happen to have a chair for us?

"I don't have a chair" ... And with that our buyers turned around and left!

Inclement weather surely can be a problem, but if a buyer is willing to go out in this type of weather to look, most likely they are motivated buyers.

Is there any reason a homeowner would not provide a chair to make it a little easier? Did we ask for such an unreasonable request? The home we were showing was in a 55 and over community, and although our buyers were "Young" 55's, taking off boots can be a challenge.

So our message to homeowner's is this...If you expect buyers to remove their boots, please provide somewhere for them to sit!

I hope home sellers will read this post and learn from it. I always advice sellers to provide a place to sit by the  door so buyers can sit down and remove shoes.

Great post Larry and Sheila.  If the seller wants to have special restrictions for their showings, they need to make it at least somewhat convenient.

Good morning Sheila and Larry. I completely agree with you. In my experience I have noticed the shoes off homes are generally the dirtiest. Aside from that I don't do shoes off. If you want to keep your home clean, provide booties that are worn over shoes.

Larry and Sheila,

Like Sheila Anderson said, booties makes so much more sense, than having to take your shoes off.  Providing them will give potential buyers a good first impression including somewhere to sit.  A

Most seller really interested in selling will put down extra protection at the door and prepare walks and porches in inclement weather.

This has not been a big problem here due to our California weather, except in our rare heavy rains, but it's pretty hard for some people to put on those booties just standing there. And if you want shoes off, provide booties - not everyone is OK with walking round in bare or stocking feet and in a few houses I have seen I would refuse.

I had that happen just last week.  No place to sit in order to take off our shoes.

Booties aren't really a good alternative.  Easy to slip and they make you feel awkward.

We use fabric booties, or shoes off. We do provide a chair near the front door - and a mat for the offending boots or shoes. Good discussion. D

And while we are on the subject, an all-weather mat would be nice, too, especially if there is rain or snow.

Oh, that is a pet peeve of mine too, Sheila! It makes no sense and especially if you have knee-high boots on - there isn't any removing them while standing (at least not with me)!
