When, after 100 years in print, our local weekly newspaper was purchased by a larger newspaper and its headquarters moved out of town, we let our subscription expire. Aside from the “Looking Back” column, which I loved, most of the news had nothing to do with Priest River.
The local editor, who was either let go or chose not to make the move, started her own free weekly newspaper to take its place.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t have access to the 100 years of “Priest River Times” issues, so there’s no “Looking Back” column. Yesterday, I found that she has replaced it with “This Week in History.”
She included these notable events from January 2-8.
1643 – The first divorce in the Colonies. (It would be fun to know that story!)
1789 – The first U.S. presidential election
1790 – President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address
1874 – Colt sold his first revolvers to the U.S. government.
1933 – Construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. (It opened in 1937.)
1946 – Elvis Presley received his first guitar. (And changed the world of popular music.)
1959 – Alaska was admitted into the Union. (I remember one of my classmates being upset about this, because she wanted to visit Alaska before it was a State.)
1974 – Nixon signed a national speed limit into law. (I guess that one went away eventually.)
1996 – GM announced its electric car.
1999 – the Clinton impeachment trial began
I don’t usually read this newspaper, because most of it is dedicated to school sports. Since I’m only interested in sports when I know one or more of the athletes, I have no interest in that.
However, after finding this column, perhaps I’ll remember to take a look each week.
What happened this week in YOUR history?
