This week in history

When, after 100 years in print, our local weekly newspaper was purchased by a larger newspaper and its headquarters moved out of town, we let our subscription expire. Aside from the “Looking Back” column, which I loved, most of the news had nothing to do with Priest River.

The local editor, who was either let go or chose not to make the move, started her own free weekly newspaper to take its place.

Unfortunately, she doesn’t have access to the 100 years of “Priest River Times” issues, so there’s no “Looking Back” column. Yesterday, I found that she has replaced it with “This Week in History.”

She included these notable events from January 2-8.

1643 – The first divorce in the Colonies. (It would be fun to know that story!)Golden Gate Bridge

1789 – The first U.S. presidential election

1790 – President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address

1874 – Colt sold his first revolvers to the U.S. government.

1933 – Construction began on the Golden Gate Bridge. (It opened in 1937.)

1946 – Elvis Presley received his first guitar. (And changed the world of popular music.)

1959 – Alaska was admitted into the Union. (I remember one of my classmates being upset about this, because she wanted to visit Alaska before it was a State.)

1974 – Nixon signed a national speed limit into law. (I guess that one went away eventually.)

1996 – GM announced its electric car.

1999 – the Clinton impeachment trial began

I don’t usually read this newspaper, because most of it is dedicated to school sports. Since I’m only interested in sports when I know one or more of the athletes, I have no interest in that.

However, after finding this column, perhaps I’ll remember to take a look each week.

What happened this week in YOUR history?

I have always been a fan of history and there are some big events in there. The story of that first divorce would be pretty interesting.

JL Boney, III - I think so too. I would imagine that divorce was a "really big deal" in those days. Probably a scandal!

This week in my history in 2001 my husband relocated to my hometown.  He's been here since after a lifetime of moving at least once every 4 years prior to that.  Navy brat and Army as an adult.  But he's been settled down here for the past 17 years.  Was quite the change for him.

We too have a "local" paper who don't have much local news and they now have some competition.

Tammy Lankford, - and from what I've read in your posts, that relocation led to "Happy ever after" for the two of you.

I do miss our local paper, the way it was way back when. When I was in high school they still reported on children being home on leave from the military, a farmer's cow having twins, etc.

In the "Looking Back" column I've found notice of my Grandmother having an ice cream social on the front lawn, and my Grandfather and Great-Grandfather building the sidewalks that still line main street.

I remember when Nixon lowered the speed limit to increase fuel mileage as a result of the Iranian oil embargo. The lines to get gas at that time rival anything we've seen since.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I have only a vague recollection of that. Living in the woods, as I have most of my life, we didn't face quite the same problems as city-dwellers. And of course, that was a time in my life when I was at home with my young children and not doing a lot of driving.

Marte Cliff, could this be your window of opportunity to begin a real estate series for the new free paper?

That's a good idea, David Wright, but agents around here don't spend money on marketing, so I wouldn't have a worthwhile audience.

I enjoy looking back and seeing what happened in history. Did you know today was Elvis' birthday?

I didn't know that, Debbie Reynolds - I wonder what Elvis would have been like today had he lived? What a wonderful voice he had.
