Tick Checking, an Important Job that can be Fun

Though ticks are around throughout the year, we are now in the hieght of Tick Season in this part of the country.

You don’t have to go anywhere near the woods to be found by a wood tick or a deer tick.  We find most of them are lurking in the grass between the road and the woods and sometimes even in our lawn.

When I was a kid we did not get too excited about ticks, they were just a part of summer.  Lyme disease was not something that we had heard of yet but we still did a daily tick check just because we did not want one of these frisky little blood suckers ballooning up on some hidden part of our body.

When I was in college during the early 80’s Lyme disease became a serious and somewhat mysterious issue with ticks, worse yet it was in the wood tick’s tiny cousin the Deer Tick.

Now tick checks became a neccessity, and a check for the deer ticks is not an easy check since these fellows are TINY.

Though the disease can be serious, I still don’t get too concerned about these little fellows.  Most of the time they reveal themselves by bumping into hairs as they travel up your body and can be picked off and disposed of.

Also most of them will be washed off if you take a shower within a few hours of picking up a tick.

And for those ticks who get by this step, it can be fun to have a friend (generally your spouse) do a check either in the shower or afterwards.

But if all of this fails and you do get one of these fellows embedded on your body, especially if it shows the telltale bullseye type target around the tick or if you are feeling like you have the flu in the summer, go see a doctor where they will start you on an antibiotic treatment.

Morning Bob.

A few years ago I was hospitalized for a week because of a tick.  You can bet I'm mindful of those critters.

Bob ticks are nothing to mess around with.  The Broker at my office got seriously ill at the beginning of the year from a tick.  She still has not fully recovered.

I get to do tick patrol on my husband. He hates even the thought of them and if has one he feels like there are a dozen more.

Bob Crane - Thanks for the educational post about ticks. Luckily, I dont hear about the problem here in TX but when living in Northern, IL it was an issue. Isn't it funny how when we were younger and didn't have much education on ticks we survived and my dog did too when we took him up to Michigan and down to Kentucky where he was covered in ticks. I don't know if the ticks got more deadly or what happened but it is to be taken seriously.

Great information on ticks, Bob! I have a friend who acquired Lyme Disease here and is now permanently disabled. She was a wildly successful medical sales rep and the disease absolutely destroyed her body. She lost everything as a result. So, believe me, I know how scary those little buggers can be and am a 'frequent checker' after having been in the yard for even just a few minutes.

Hope you have a great week ahead!

Good reminder Bob.  We have Lyme disease potential real bad here in SE PA.  I have already been treated for it as well as many other people I know.  It seems like everyone should have guinea hens in their yards to feast on these harmful insects!!

Hello Bob,

great post on ticks and the deer tick is so dangerous, I remember finding one that was so small you could barely see it. My stepmother got bit around 30 years ago, went to the doctor and they said it was nothing, only to come down with limes decease later ;o(

TICKS...are Bloody Dangerous (no pun intended)! i was bit by a dog tick 4 yrs ago. Took the tick and bagged it went right to my doctor - who said we'll send it to Public Health and give you 2 wks of antibiotics. A month later the doc said " it wasn't a "DEER TICK" and your blood was negative - so you don't have Lyme. A few weeks later I was having leg cramps, but being an active runner - I thought I hurt it at the speed track). Things really worsened over the next 2 months - severe hip, back, neck pain and stabbing headaches and severe fatigue.  I could barely walk and by 9 months even my shoulders locked (frozen shoulders) so I could not dress or shower without help, and I could no longer drive a vehicle.  I went through 3 years of hell and saw 10 doctors/specialists etc all to no avail.  I was "diagnosed" with Rheumatoid Arthritis!!! Really???  Long Story Short - I found a great Lyme "Literate" Doctor in NY and have being improving slowly.  I was also diagnosed with 2 Co-Infections from the same tick bite - Babesia (a malaria type infection) and Bartonella (Cat Scratch Fever). Many folks absolutely don't know the extreme dangers of ticks. Many more people are "misdiagnosed" with ALS, MS, Parkinson's etc etc.  My friend was diagnosed 20 yrs ago with MS and she used a walker.  She told me how similar her symptoms were to mine (pain, balance issues, numbness, tingling, fevers). So got tested in NY and the doctor said to her YOU don't have MS, You have Lyme Disease.  Now she walks ok and is able to do Zumba classes. I hope this helps to enlighten someone out there!!!!

Bob, many more are misdiagnosed then you would believe. I follow many Lyme Groups and many have horrow stories that are similar with misdiagnosis from Fibromyalgia to Alzheimers.  The study at the Harvard Brain bank of 10 Alzheimers cases, found the Lyme Bacteria in 7 or 0f 10 brains!  I know of 4 local ALS cases in our region, where they each later tested positive for Lyme Disease. I feel it is the bacteria Borrelia attacking the brain that is the root case of many of these neurological diseases. My advice is Be your own Health Advocate - ask the tough questions and do your homework!
