Sunday Morning at Our Multi-Generational Home
It’s been a while since I’ve written an update about life at our multigenerational home. Dad is still with us, and while he is too weak to get out of bed these days, he is not too uncomfortable at this point. We are so grateful.
Mornings are my favorite time with dad. I’m ( Debb) an early riser, therefore it’s usually my job to get the various coffee pots brewing. Bernie’s is made in a Technivorm Moccamaster, I use a french press, and dad drinks his blend out of an old-fashioned Mr. Coffee machine.
I digress. The point is my first contact with dad each day. He likes me to turn on the local news channel, open the blinds to the hummingbird feeder outside the window, take off the night comforter, and then wait for the coffee to brew.
We make small talk. “It’s daylight again,” he says. I respond, “It’s a beautiful sunrise, dad.” “Hope you slept well, dad.” At times we joke. “As long as you’re still with us, I suppose you want breakfast today too.” He grins, “Well yes I do, dear. And, I want it to be something fancy.” Often, he struggles to find the right words.
There is nothing profound about this exchange. It’s just the beautiful little moments in life when we connect with the people we love. I don’t take them for granted, and in my heart, I feel he doesn’t either. Life is quite an amazing journey isn’t it? Dad's transition reminds me of the importance in savoring each and every moment.
