Saving for Your Down Payment

Anyone thinking about buying a home knows that they need to save for their down payment.  But, if you are like most people, you probably think it will take forever and don’t know where to start.

In this modern age of technology some things change and some things stay the same.  There are some great App’s to help you save and some good old fashioned ways with a modern twist too.

There are a few websites that reward you for shopping.

Ibotta - use the link here and you’ll get a free gift for starting your account and using it.  Ibotta provides you with lists of products from different retailers and online vendors and if you purchase from them you will get cash back rewards that you can cash out on gift cards.

Receipt Hogs - scan your receipts in and gather points that you can cash out for giftcards.

MyPoints rewards you for shopping online, taking surveys and visiting websites.  The points accumulate until you have enough to purchase a gift card for something you are looking for.

You can even access www.coupons.com through Mypoints and earn extra points that way.

Acorns - rounds up the purchase and deposits the change into an investment account.  College students get to use Acorns for free for a maximum of 4 years.

Trim - is like having your own personal financial analyst.  You can link all your accounts and the app will analyze your spending and tell you where you can save money.

Scoutmob - is an Android and iOS mobile app and will scout your local area for coupons and discounts at local restaurants, event venues and stores.  It is similar to Livingsocial and Groupon.

Chime - is an Android and iOS mobile banking app. It includes a spending account and debit card that is FDIC-insured so you can safely deposit funds, see transactions instantly and track spending on the go.

The mobile banking app also offers an automatic savings account, which allows you to start saving money without thinking about it by automatically setting aside 10 percent of every paycheck you deposit into Chime. You can also enable rounding-up on your purchases and have the difference transferred to your savings every time you use the Chime debit card.

The banking app helps you both save money fast and stash it away in a savings account so you are not tempted to spend it on trivial things. They do not charge overdraft fees, foreign transaction fees or fees for monthly minimums and ATM use.

It is amazing how little things can add up.  Sometimes just a little adjustment to a monthly budget can make quite a difference.  That morning latte on the way to work.  Gym memberships you are paying for, but don't use.  Subscriptions you no longer care about or read, etc.  All, this after a number of months, can add significantly to a down payment.
