Not Everything is a Winning Strategy

Success Ahead...or Not!We are often asked about best business practices to generate income as self-employed Realtors®/Brokers. Most of us who survived The Great Recession cringe when we hear, "Now, that was an epic fail!"

Why? Because we tried anything and everything (legally, of course) to build our businesses during the recession. Additional challenges, besides the obvious (fear of home buying and selling unless a new job took one to a new city) was the sheer volume of shiny, new objects that were pedaled to us daily. Which one do we choose? Which one will bring the highest ROI...if any

We bought lots of shiny new gizmos, tried them - sometimes for longer than we should have - and 99% of them WERE epic fails. Hey, when members of your sphere are as quiet as church mice and that has historically been the bulk of your business, you will try anything within reason...and many of us did!

My recommendation now is to always seek advice from others in the business - you'll quickly find someone who has tried nearly all of these tools and you'll get the 'real' scoop from them. ALWAYS ASK BEFORE YOU BUY!

This is one of the Super Bowl pre-game-released commercials about just that - failures, and hilarious ones at that! Of course, the fur baby Amazon collar is my favorite!

For me it was to survey the marketplace at that time, identify short sales as the lead horse to survival and success, and then become well educated and proficient at getting them closed. The best bright shiny object is in your head and it tells you to adapt.

It's shocking to hear that 99% of the shiny objects did NOT do what you hoped they would!!  WOW.  Please elaborate in your next blog!!  Thanks Debe!

I have a client right now who is, I fear, pursuing a shiny object that will let him down. Wish I could say NO - don't do this!

I'm not a football fan, but do look forward to seeing the Superbowl ads. Some of THEM could be classified as shiny objects, since you rememer the ad but then can't recall what product they were marketing.

Always love anything with a puppy dog!

Oh gosh, John, the list goes on and on - from coaching to CRMs and IDXs to predictive analytics...all epic fails! Thankfully, as a group, we learned how to build websites and SEO, Google, etc. and generated our own leads/business that all of the companies we had previously tried, failed miserably at doing.

I learned so much and also learned that my sphere, websites/blog and farming were all I really need. Salespeople get nowhere with me now! LOL

What is that object, perhaps someone in my group has tried it and I can help you convince him, Marte Cliff.

You know, I told Ray the other day that one of the commercials I had seen and loved, it was a shame that they didn't integrate their product well enough. I couldn't remember what the product was - or even in what genre!

And, yes, the puppies get me everytime too!

He has left real estate, so this is something else - along the lines of a "business in a box." It's a long story and hard to explain or define, but while I've known him for a long time, we don't have the kind of relationship that would allow for me saying "Don't do that."

As for Superbowl - it amazes me that advertisers spend millions on those ads when all they really are is entertainment. If an ad doesn't make you want the product, then it's a waste of the advertiser's money.

Debe, you make some great points, we have all tried different tools, silver bullets to save our lively hood and indeed many did not work, I am grateful to have survived a couple downturns with out having to call it a day... The beauty of our profession is that there is hope if we see it...not everyone knows how to see the opportunities, Endre

I am impulsive by nature and really need to rein myself in when reviewing the "next great thing in Real Estate tools"  I have been sucked in several times in 2018...  Mama always said, "If it is too good to be true then it probably is."

Hi Debe,
What I want to know is who ordered that dog collar and put it on him in the first place.  It seems Harrison has no-one to blame but himself. LOL

Thanks for the chuckle, although it sent  me into hacking coughs!  Love Harrison Ford and that dog was perfect!  I so remember the shiny objects back then.  Fox Channel 10 here called a bunch of us to do a phone bank.  They charged us plenty to be on their site!

Amazon had a winning strategy with that ad.  Say it didn't make the cut for broadcast, save the money it would have cost to air it there, and profiting on the millions of views it got when people found it on its own on YouTube.  Great strategy.
