YouTube Thursdays - Organize with Outlines and Storyboards

We shared our thoughts about niche video marketing last week. This week, we are sharing a rough outline with you for our Multi-Generational Housing niche. Akin to a storyboard with illustrations, camera angles, etc, this outline is always the first step of our video production process.

If you're also working on a niche video to share with potential clients, we recommend an outline to get things started. The final product may change and once we do the actual filming, it may change again. Don't ever be afraid to let things unfold organically. Go with the flow!

Here's our intial outline. Remember, we are going for the emotional hook (authentically) and the benefits of sharing a household. Both are triggers for our target demographics - baby boomers.  Once again, this will likely be refined as we create the video.

Together Again - Our Multi-generational Home

Open - Montage of family scenes

Narration:

Our situation is a bit different in that we are two sisters, who with our husbands, decided to move in together to share in the care of mom and dad.

Dad is gone now, and we have shifted all of the focus on mom.

(Photo or video of dad)

Getting her to and from appointments and making sure she gets exercise, social interaction, and healthy food.

(Photos - video.  Scenes of car leaving with mom, visiting, exercise class?) and eating a healthy meal.)

Narration:

Nearly four years later, we’ve discovered there are a lot of benefits to sharing life under one roof.

( Video or photo?)

Narration:

Sure, it’s great to share expenses, but it’s much more than that…

(Short video  snippets)

Cheri Mowing on Lawn tractor

Bob Stacking wood with Liam

Bernie and Debb in Garden

Narration: We enjoy sharing chores, sharing visiting grandkids, and supporting one another.

However, it's important to note, we need our privacy too…

Cheri narration -
This is our house, with a completely separate entrance.

(Video scenes of house...)

Debb narration

In our home, mom has her own bedroom, sitting room and bathroom.

She shares the Kitchen and Great room with Bernie and me - and Mac of course! (

(Scenes of shared spaces - Mac in scene)

Final Scene - Family Together again.

( Video of Mom with family)

Narration

The bottom line, it’s about sharing life with people we love.

That is really cool and the type of planning that I like to do, but also finds that it takes more time than I am willing to give towards making a video, especially when I don't really know what I am doing, haha.

Besides the storyboard, this is the most important aspect of the post. Kudos!

Grant Schneider as with most of my outlines/storyboards, they are always subject to change. But it's an important part of the creative process...and helps me formulate a plan.

Thanks Michael Jacobs - exactly. And it's fine line trying to capture the authenticity and also entertain with a well defined plan.

Still want to see a tennis series from you Brian England .  :)

Ron and Alexandra Seigel and Sheri Sperry - MCNE® free flowing yes. And you both get the importance of allowing things to evolve naturally - the final project may be different than what I'm visualizing right now, but there has to be a starting point.  :)

Debb,

The starting point, once it becomes clear everything else fits into place, although there are times when I have begun at the middle or the end thinking it was the starting point, only to find myself reversing and switching...A

Great outline for your video.  I have designed a model multi-gen house but I bet if I could put a video like this in front of the floor plans the viewer would buy into the lifestyle aspect rather than just try to understand the geometry of the finished product. Thanks for the great idea and hope to see your video soon!

Debb and Bernie- this is a marvelous post that should help anyone struggling with where and how to begin creating a video for their marketplace. It's like setting out to write a book. Begin with an outline.

A plan is important..in the olden days I owned a marketing agency ..storyboards told the tale to the client of the new campaign...and this is a different campaign for a different audience ...we said.

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Funny that I am reading this post (a bit later, as usual!) after just this afternoon, wrapping up a bidding war on a multi-generational home for one of my relocation buyers. (In fact, they are referrals from another AR member!)

We had such a struggle finding one that checked all of the boxes for their family and obviously, we weren't the only ones on a search for the home we were fortunate enough to find for them. We just found out we won the bidding war and I'm awaiting the final Contract at the moment.

I do love that you keep a story board - I do the same thing. I think my bullet points are too long though. I like how you abbreviate yours - it's easier to stay on-point and not have to continuously re-do.

Thanks, as always, for the great YouTube tips, Debb!
