The time of year has come for many when the holidays are extremely hard for families who are struggling to either understand addiction or families who are at their wits end because of addiction. If you have never been put in these positions, consider yourself lucky because many families have.
One of the hardest things to do is navigate not becoming addicted to someone elses addiction and/or navigating addiction while watching a person you love self destruct. Often times your helpful nature leads to enabling their behaviors. Finding a local support group not only gives you the emotional support you need to navigate these very muddy waters, but it also gives you the tools and skills so that you can cope with handling situations directly relating to a friend or family members addiction.
It is hard watching someone you love struggle, but the emotional toll it takes on you is sometimes just as hard. Being around others who are or have gone through the same thing is not only helpful but refreshing to know that you truly are not alone. This is the time of year when depression becomes on the rise and it can sneak up on you before you even realize it is there.
Rim Family Services offers a free support group every Thursday from 4pm to 5pm to help families struggling with addiction. Please, if you need help and support, reach out to specialists who are there and trained to help you.
