What's So Special About Chapel of the Holy Cross and Surrounding Area?

The Special Area of the Sedona Chapel in the Rocks

This video really helps to showcase not only the Chapel of the Holy Cross but the community that is immediately adjacent to it.

When was the Chapel Built?

The Chapel of the Holy Cross sits on top of red rocks right off the SR 179. It was built in 1956 and that area has been known as the Chapel area ever since then.  The sculptor and local rancher, Marguerite Brunswig Staude was inspired by the architecture of the Empire State Building and wanted to build a church with that type of architecture in mind.  She worked with Lloyd Wright the son of Frank Lloyd Wright. She attempted to do this in Budapest but retreated back to her native land of Arizona at the outbreak of WWII. We are lucky she did! She built what she envisioned right here in Sedona.

The Chapel was built on Coconino National Forest land and the special use permit was secured by the late Senator Barry Goldwater. It was built in 18 months for a price tag of $300,000.  Imagine that! As of today, hundreds of thousands have flocked there to see it and feel the energy.

USA Today's 10best.com has Rated the Chapel #1 of the

Best Attraction in Sedona.

Why is the Chapel So Special?

People are drawn to this Roman Catholic Chapel from all over the world. Everyone is welcome. Over the years, people talk about how special this area is and others want to see it. If you believe in energy centers (vortices) this area has one of the strongest. I am not one to feel the energy of other vortices or vortexes. But this one, even I could feel. I can't describe it but my husband stated that it feels like very calming energy. We had an opportunity to see the Virgin Mary's final homesite in Turkey and my husband says the energy feels the same. You feel at peace.

Why Do People Want To Live In The Chapel Area?

Just about anywhere you live in this area, you have a view of one or more of the special red rock formations in Sedona. I have had an opportunity to list and sell many homes in this area. All had some views. In the top picture above is the view from the kitchen of one of my listings. You can actually see it in the video. The views of the surrounding area are outstanding.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - Those who are in tune with energy and meditation will feel it, those who are not, will feel the energy but not focus on that.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel - I am glad you got to see it. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is a very unusual piece of architecture inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's work.

Hi Endre Barath, Jr. - I am glad you got to see it. You did inspire me to write this and I thought I had tagged you but I have had so much going on, I must have forgotten to do that. It took me 3 days on and off to put it together. I am getting ready for a couple of listings and that has been taking most of my time.

WOW! Absolutely breathtaking, Sheri! I can only imagine the sense of 'freedom' and being in touch with nature on that campus - even in the parking lot! I am always amazed at your personal view; I'm sure living or worshiping with views like that has to be simply magical.

Sheri - What a beautiful Chapel. The construction must have been very challenging but the results are powerful and inspiring. There are great views there too. This is a wonderful place to mediate, reflect, pray, get married or engaged. The hopes and dreams are endless. May this new Chapel be a blessing to everyone who lives and visits Sedona.

Hi Michael Jacobs - As I look back to the years before this Chapel of the Holy Cross was there.  I am in awe of the imagination and inspiration it took to build this wonderful cultural site for all to enjoy.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD,

Back in 2001, (before we bought a home here) we were visiting the Chapel in the Rocks. The inside of the chapel is amazing.  Sorry about the quality, this is an 18-year-old image!

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI, MRP - ditto to all you have said. The views here are outstanding. It is absolutely the best place to see at least 5 iconic red rock views of Sedona. This image shows 2 of those red rocks. Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock.  Notice that there are no cars around!  Sedona was just a sleepy little town back then. Parking at top of Chapel of the Holy Cross 2001

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I went hiking in Sedona in the early 1990s. At that time, I felt like it was holy ground. I don't recall seeing any development and I would have remembered that chapel.

That's a great photograph. I like how it was taken with the car facing the view and you were standing in the right spot, not to detract from its beauty but add your own beauty.
