Real Estate Open House Surprises

I do enjoy hosting open houses and many times I am surprised at the conversations that I have with those visiting the house.  Mary Margaret helped me stage a house a few years ago.  She added a very large, very nice Scrabble board made by Restoration Hardware on the living room coffee table, then she added words like, home sweet home, to the board.  I thought it was a little over the top, but every person that came through the door that day loved it and had to talk about it.  It is a fun way to get visitors to loosen up and enjoy the open house.

When we put our home on the market a couple of weeks ago, we had removed all of our furniture so there was no place to put the Scrabble board.  I was a little worried that I did not have my "ice breaker,"  but everyone did want to talk.  They just did not want to talk about the things I thought they would want to talk about; the new shutters, the renovated bathrooms and kitchen, the new pool tile and plaster, the larger yard than usual for the neighborhood, the newer floors, or the relatively new crown molding in some of the rooms.  I was surprised at what they wanted to talk about.  My window sills!

Good morning, Kathy Streib.  I have really never seen granite window sills anywhere else, but I have seen window sills that are tiled.  I was lucky my granite guys shared the idea with me and that we had enough extra granite to do all the sills, but one.  It does look really sharp, there is very little maintenance and it holds up to condensation running down on the sills, if you have that problem.

Good morning, Endre Barath, Jr. I do not know why, but I get little extra business from my open houses.  It does consolidate many of the showings, if I do them at good times and that makes it easier for my clients, especially if they are living in the house.  As an agent, I think I am an acquired taste. 😎

I love the idea, it's impressive, thank you for that Ray! Window seals are dust catchers and hard to clean if neglected.

I think you probably now, Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can!, but I was a painting contractor for decades and window sills could really get damaged by moisture.  Tile or granite make that problem and their maintenance almost obsolete.  Thank you for stopping by and leaving a comment.  Have a great week!

Hi Raymond:

I think the scrabble board is a great idea!

Guess we can always learn something about what appeals to potential buyers coming through an open house and what the conversation will focus on. We should not make assumptions!

Jeff

It is funny, Jeff Dowler, CRS, I came very close to vetoing the scrabble board.  Mary Margaret would make a great agent if I could just get her interested.  So much talent...

I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend!

Ray Henson - You and MM come up with great ideas! The Scrabble Board was brilliant! Much better than a coffee table book. I watched your video and liked your idea of Granite Window Sills too! I have seen people use Granite on their window sills in my area, but honestly, yours look better! I appreciate how you explained why Granite Window Sills are not only more attractive, but saves a lot on maintenance because, you're right, a little water on the sills makes permanent damage. Plus, the gist and success for holding better open houses is to listen to what the people say when they come through the doors and to come up with brilliant ideas for conversation pieces you can start are they can see when the come through the house I love both ideas! And by the way, that backyard pool with lights looks inviting too!

Hi Curtis Van Carter.  Mary Margaret and I have enjoyed Restoration Hardware in Yountville twice.  We love their use of the live olive trees inside, as well as, all the fabulous lighting.  We also enjoyed the food.  It is hard for me to get past the steak sandwich.  It is so good!
