Memorial Day Weekend 2022, the Start of Summer in the Northwoods, and More.

Well it’s the eve of that weekend that many people up here wait for all spring, Memorial Day.

The roads are packed with happy tourists northwoods bound, with trucks, campers, ATV’s and all the toys of summer.

A few foresters at WMS are going to be busy this weekend too, visiting with clients who are making this exodus to the north to visit cabins that they don’t see too often.

It is a joyous weekend for many as they celebrate the end of snow and though the lakes are still a little too cold to swim in, they are nice to look at, paddle a canoe in, and maybe even catch a few fish in.

Today people in our area are getting ready to plant corn in the garden, I am a little apprehensive about planting this early since we are likely to get a few more frosts, but with as hot as it was today it is hard to imagine any frost.

Certainly too hot for me as I was kind of wishing for that snowbank that a friend from Alaska posted on his Facebook page last night.  I am not sure how my friends in the southern states can handle more than a three month summer, since I was ready for more snow after an hour.

Whether you like the hot summers or not, it is time to get acclimated and ready to enjoy a few months of summer fun.

While enjoying this first taste of summer this weekend, take a little time to remember what Memorial day is really about, not the day off of work, not the introduction to summer, but the many heroes who have given their lives so that we can enjoy all of these gifts.

Take a little time to participate in one of the many ceremonies hosted by the American Legion or VFW and pay respect to those fallen and often forgotten heroes in your town.

Hi Bob... I do hope more people remember to take a moment and, as you said:

While enjoying this first taste of summer this weekend, take a little time to remember what Memorial day is really about, not the day off of work, not the introduction to summer, but the many heroes who have given their lives so that we can enjoy all of these gifts.

Bob the freedom we enjoy comes at a very high price.  May we never take it for granted.
