Real Estate Sales & Seniors

HAVE A HEART

It takes a special Agent to help a senior move. The emotional impact may be greater than expected but a trained Agent who earned their SRES, the Seniors Real Estate Specialist designation can make a difference. Agents awarded by the SRES Council to REALTORS have successfully completed coursework on the real estate needs of home buyers age 50+ community.

Going to the movies is a nostalgic past time of many seniors. As a REALTOR® with a SRES designation, who also loves old movies and helping seniors, I tied some quotes with life experiences.

What the Sales Agent may say to a Client:

“I’m gonna make him an offer he can’t refuse.” The Godfather 1972)

What the Buyers may say when they purchase a property online without Buyer’s Representation:

“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” The Wizard of Oz (1939)

What Buyers & Sellers may say during Multiple Offers:

“Fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night.” All About Eve (1950)

Buyer’s Remorse:

“The mirror it’s broken…. Yes, I know. I like it that way. Makes me look the way I feel.” The Apartment (1960)

An Angry Client:

“What we’ve got here is a failure to communicate!” Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Having to Move because the Landlord or Family said so:

“Takes no nerve to do something, ain’t nothing else you can do.” Grapes of Wrath (1940)

An unhappy Client:

“You’re tearing me apart.” Rebel Without a Cause (1955)

A Senior who may be more prepared before signing a contract:

“Hand me my purse, will you darling? A girl can’t read that sort of thing without her lipstick.” Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

A Professional properly trained and experienced:

“If you just learn a single trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb inside his skin and walk around.” To Kill a Mocking Bird (1962)

In all seriousness, elders who need to move are dealing with a lot more than people realize and should be respected with dignity and respect. Things to consider when representing seniors include:

  • Aging ailments, emotional, and financial stress
  • Loss of Independence
  • Leaving their social network and familiar surroundings
  • Need to stay busy when there isn’t enough time for family visits
  • Support from people and doctors who specialize in their needs

I specialize in transitioning Seniors. My content and photos are like me, original. The source of quotes are noted. The photo was taken when I visited Galveston, Texas where trees were sculptured by artists after Hurricane Ike in September 2008. Many of the trees were nostalgic carvings to help the residents cope with their losses. Keeping memories alive is very important to seniors.

Older people who have to sell their home and move to somewhere unfamiliar need caring assistance. It can be a traumatic time. In your area, they should call Patricia Feager!!!

Good morning again, Patricia... I work with lots of seniors in all stages and have done for decades. Like any other generation, needs from one senior or senior family are unique and one size does not fit all. As always, you bring a fresh and unique perspective to the topic.

Nina Hollander, Broker - Aging is no laughing matter. Many are vulnerable and need proper guidance from those who know and understand their needs.

That is a very good designation to have and there is a lot more that goes into helping a senior move, especially if they don't have a family to help them.

Brian England - It take a lot of work on both parts, the seller and the agent. The reward is when the senior is happy.

Good morning Patricia,

Excellent designation to obtain. So many do not have family around to help and will require more time with orchestrating the move but so gratifying!

Dorie Dillard Austin TX - You make excellent points. Seniors have earned respect and should be supported. This really is a worthwhile designation, but it's so much more than just a title, it's a life changing experience for both agent and the seniors.

I loved your post and all the great quotes. They made me smile and, in many cases, laugh out loud.

About a year ago, I showed up at a listing appointment for seniors that just lost their mom.  They were lost and all one client could say is, "What am I going to do with all this ****?"  It was an overwhelming moment for them.  I told them that I would handle it all.  I am sure you are even better at it than I am, Patricia, and that your clients are lucky to have you as their agent.

Good Morning Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

This is a good post. Many seniors are now retiring in place and many have lived in their homes their entire adult life. It is difficult for them. I had one client, several years ago who broke down weeping the day the home closed because he was so deeply invested in his house.

Bill Salvatore - East Valley - I wish you a very happy weekend too. Thanks for leaving a comment.

Ray Henson - because you are a caring man, you care deeply about the lives of seniors who are so overwhelmed. You were made big and strong and have a strong shoulder to cry on. Thank you for being so caring.

Doug Dawes - I had a man do that to me too. Before the buyers could move in, the other agent and I (including my clients/buyers) were so compassionate it hurt us all because the man in the chair would not, could not even think he really had to move. We all pitched in and helped him cope with was for him a loss beyond imagination. A house isn't just a location or an address, nor is it bricks and mortar. It is a dwelling of a lifetime of memories.

Patricia moving in your mature years can be scary, and the more years, the scarier it gets.

George Souto - the road to maturity is different for all. A bump in the road can be scarier for some than others. Having the ability to provide guidance makes the road less traveled easier when there is trust.
