Since I was about 21 I have been self employed most of my life. There has been the occasional bout of working for someone but mostly I was responsible for making things happen in whatever business I was working. I was always a believer in advertising and took out a lot of adverts in different Antiques Magazines around the world. Our family and our business were well known and recognized as a result.
Today, things have changed, everyone talks about branding, and to do this one needs to be authentic, to know who you are and what drives you. Then apply that to all the "new" and different methods of reaching people. That can be Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, blogs, newsletters, and even some old ones like snail mail. You need to give your potential clients the means to find the path to your door.
Yes, this past year I have been mailing letters to my sphere once a quarter and people have reached out as a result. This year I am continuing this and will be adding an email newsletter each month as well.
Having moved last year, I am working to build up a new local audience through video, so I will be posting videos about local events, places and people to build a new audience.
When it comes to real estate, I use everything above and also make sure we have professional photos, as they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and you only have one chance to make a first impression so you want to make a good one.
I have always been a believer in making a house available for buyers to see, so when listing I make sure to host public open houses and to invite the neighbors so they can invite friends to come visit and purchase near them.
Advice for sellers hire someone to come deep clean the house before listing, so many buyers are put off by dirt, it makes them wonder if the appliances have been cared for in the same way. And that first impression carries over to the curb appeal, so hire a landscaper to spruce up, weed the flower beds, and mulch and keep the lawn mowed and looking sharp.
