Carlsbad home owners likely know all about the town dump - more formally the recycling and buyback center at the City of Carlsbad Public Works and Operations Center just north of Palomar Airport - as well as the weekly trash pick-up and recycling services provided by the city through Waste Management.

Carlsbad Home Owners - Are YOU Recycling?

Household hazardous waste in my garageMost folks don't have too much trouble getting rid of trash, but hazardous waste is another matter. Landfills won't accept it and you can't just take it somewhere and leave.

Carlsbad recently approved a pick-up service through Clean Harbors. Residents can call Clean Harbors at 1-800-444-4244 to schedule a pick-up at their homes for $10 (the city pays the balance of the cost).

All you have to do is put out your hazardous waste on your porch or driveway and Clean Harbors will whisk it away (limit - 15 gallons or 125 lbs. per pick-up, which is substantial).

Items you can put out include paint, motor oil, batteries, cleaners, lawn chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, TVs and computer monitors.

If paying $10 is just too much, you can still take your household hazardous waste to the permanent facilities in Oceanside or Vista.

For more information, contact the City of Carlsbad Environmental Programs line at (760) 602-4646.

Wow! $10 to get rid of your hazardous waste is one huge bargain! I wish we had a similar service here in St Petersburg.

Jeff our town use to do a hazardous waste day at least a couple of times a year, but has not had one resently.  I guess I need to find out what they are doing instead of this so I can get rid of mine.

Jeff, all too many folks here just put the stuff into a plastic bag with their empty Wheaties boxes.  Here the city arranges special pickups a couple fo times year.  You've inspired me to get the details!  Thanks.

Thanks, Ray. I would be surprised if there is not some sort of hazardous waste program, even if they do not pick up at home.

Well, that is true, Patricia. I'm glad cities are becoming more proactive about this stuff and making it easier for homeowners.

Many towns now have these types of programs -- Nashua, NH is one of the towns in NH -- however, too many people do not take advantage of these important services.  This is a great post to remind people that they do have a way to recycle and dispose of hazardous substances.
