The thrill of "the Surge"

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

Whos.Amung.us This surge has nothing to do with politics or Iraq...

ActiveRain settings NOW allows us to automatically post our content to Twitter.  Shannon Gilmore's featured post

I have one widget on my blog that I love.  I have taken most of my widgets off because widgets and customization slow a blog down.  However I can not bear to remove my  Who's s Amung US widget.  I can't  bear to removed my cornfield customization either, but that's another story.  I am clinging to my corn.  I love to see the surge in traffic when I tweet a post on my ActiveRain blog and Who's Amung Us shows me "the Surge" in traffic.

If you Twitter your ActiveRain posts,  will you see the surge?  Or feel the surge?  Maybe,  maybe not...  but one way to see it is with this lovely little Widget in your side bar... my widget blends in, in blue.  Who's Amung Us has other bells and whistle's, maps, stats too.  I have to admit for me it is the thrill of seeing the surge. I have another widget for stats.

The 208 above is NOT any of my blogs. I am easy to please.  I am thrilled with 8...  I think the highest I have ever seen on my blog is 14.  A surge of 14 was thrilling for me.

I tweet as @MoinColumbusOH

Like you, I find that the widgets slow things down considerably.  I did my own test of sorts.  I had a couple of widgets loaded, and checked out my blog from my office computer (which is slower than at home)  That was eye opening for me.  It barely loaded.  Now they're gone.

I think I can get a handle on the surge from StatCounter, which I analyze pretty regularly.   I'm too nervous about slowing down my page loading again.

I just toggled the AR Twitter thingie on yesterday.  I suppose it's really a cop-out.  It lets me tweet without actually having to participate in a conversation or think of something different to tweet about.

I feel a little guilty about aiding in the conversion of Twitter into nothing more than a collection of "feeds".... But it is what it is, there are only so many available hours in a day.

Sigh.

Kris I just don't get the same thrill from my StatCounter (I use that for the big info) that I do from my Who's Amung Us.

I check Stat Counter occasionally.

This has not tweeted yet.  Delay time.

Snafu?

Cheryl I was going to mention the Chris Brogan approach to tweeting blog content  which I have used for awhile and really does get a better "Surge" than what I was getting with Twitter feed.  I decided against confusing TwitterVirgins.  I think getting them tweeting posts and getting more traffic and maybe starting conversations is more important than the Chris Brogan variation... which is not just broadcasting.

Maureen, my post tweeted within a few minutes.  2 or 3 probably.  Could be slower now as there are more people on than there were at 5:45 when I made my post.

It's been 26 minutes?  AR overwhelmed? I set it up incorrectly?  I tweeted it manually the old fashioned way...  mini surge.

Jeremy I have seen posts about all the wondrous things the itty bitty widget does... yeah Statmeter, Statcounter, MyBloglog.com  etc do all that... too... I just like the thrill of seeing I am not alone.

And it is less stalkerish to me than MyBloglog.com  which shows you who has been there if they are MyBloglog.com members. I hate being seen...

Maureen, I have seen the surge on twitter of all the new posts, but I think I am going to chose not to feed Active Rain there due to the fact that I already feed my outside blog there. Hopefully everyone will remember that twitter is not just a place to feed, it's a place to participate.

At first I had all three of my blogs auto  feeding but I was definitely participating... that broke somehow at some point....  the auto feed.

I still read Twitter a lot but I am not as big a participator as many so I try not to just feed and when I do feed I think using the Chris Brogan conversational style rather than "Just Posted on ActiveRain" works for me.
