It has been a family tradition since coming to America to pick out our Christmas Tree the day after Thanksgiving.
Now we have a set appointment with Home Depot each year in South Florida since 1995. As soon as November arrives I get excited about getting our tree.
I have lived in many different places and countries from Hawaii to Utah to Europe and so have experienced many different traditions of getting our Christmas Tree. When I lived in Hawaii, I would get my tree from this one grocery store each year. In Utah we would go to these Tree Farms where they grew the trees all year round and you would go and pick one out and cut it down yourself. The kids loved doing that.
We love the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree. Many of my friends have artificial trees but that is just not us.
When we lived in Washington and California we would go out in the hills and find our own Christmas trees, cut them down and bring them home.
One year in Tacoma Washington while visiting my grandmother we took our van out to the hills to look for our tree and cut it down ourselves. This one year it had snowed alot. I brought my little brother who was about 16 with me and my first born son was like 1 year old. Soon it was hard to see the road. All I could do was to pray as I looked over the cliffs seeing how far the fall would be if our van slipped in any way. My brother was hanging on to the door handle. I asked him why he was hugging the door like that and he said that he would rather jump out than fall down the cliff in the van. I will never forget how scared we were that day! We did find a wonderful tree after all.
Here is a video of how we get our tree in the sunshine state of Florida.
