Getting To The WHY Clears A Lot Of Things Up

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

In people businesses like Real Estate it is always a study in human behavior. Practitioners of this sport in all stripes you might think get to play armchair psychologists trying to figure out the reasons people do or don't do all sorts of things. Everyone brings their entire psychological makeup to a particular point in time, their good, their bad, and their ugly. We are not perfect nor are our clients and associates we work with. Oftentimes if there is a rule stated or a behavior observed you are observing the "WHAT" of a situation. For example, the listing commission is X %. Or, I don't take calls from clients past 7 p.m. on weekdays. If you are ever to understand other people, and YOURSELF the best you can, you have to switch gears and get to the root of things.

Comic BookGetting To The WHY Clears A Lot Of Things Up.

Let me illustrate with a brief story. Ten year old Matthew was caught by his father stealing some comic books from a store. His father scolded him to, "Never do that again." A few months later his father found some more comic books he couldn't have bought. Turns out this time Matthew stole them from the library. His father took him to his room and gave him a spanking and closed the door and told him to remain there. Outside the door the father cried and went to the sink to wipe his tears. He came back to Matthew and said he would have to stay in his room the rest of the day. Matthew never stole again. Years later his Mom said to him that spanking really stopped that stealing. And Matthew said, "No Mom, I just didn't want to see Daddy crying anymore." The "what" was the spanking to stop the bad behavior. The "why" was the love the son had for his father to not hurt him anymore with his disappointment of him.

With many things you see in life, including your own self-examination for how come you behave the way you do and looking more deeply at the reasons others behave the way they do, work very hard to seek out the "whys." Even our grand purpose or purposes for our own lives people say find the "BIG WHY." If you get those why answers you will achieve some very good understanding and you won't feel like you are beating your head against the wall to figure others or yourself out. In the end, you can only affect change on yourself, and influence others. But if you have those why answers in your hip pocket you will be so far ahead of many that I see frustrated out there that only see the what of a situation.

Good luck with putting that thinking cap on. You can do it. You now have a Ph.D.  in Why-ology!!

Understanding the WHY is the foundation of achieving things from raising children to what is motivating people to move.  Great post!

Getting to the root of an issue is always important, and my self examination is far too frightening for me to attempt.

Hi Gary, understanding people's motivations as well as your own is what Realtors do....if they can not read people knowing themselves my be all they have left. :-)  A great thought provoking post.

I was thinking about this post all afternoon after I wrote that. Glad I came back to read what everyone had to say. I suppose I was thinking about non realtor type things. Knowing what your clients want and why goes without saying. Knowing why people behave the way they do, beyond me! Gary, you are one thought provoking guy! Keep it up.

Gary - The WHY of this story brought a couple tears to my eyes.  As parents we never know what will actually become the catalyst for having our children do better, or at least do the right thing!  The fact the boy wanted to stop his father's tears, says a lot about the character of the boy!  I hope the mother increased his allowance, so he could buy a comic book or two!

People react to the same situation in many different ways--that is why the people business is always full of mysteries and the unexpected.

Gary, so true. I remember as a child that seeing my dad's disappointment was far greater of an influence on me than his spankings - which were very few. I remember his telling me - and the other kids - that this hurt him far more than it did us. We didn't really "get that" until we had children of our own. Now, it's their turn to tell their children the same story. Great analogy. ;-)

I liken this to walking in someone else's shoes.  When I'm really confused about the what's, I really try to imagine walking in the other person's shoes and that seems to bring things into better focus.  Great post and love the story.  I think most children really do want to please their parents and are always wanting their approval in some way.  I know what it would do to me if I had ever disappointed mine to the point that I made them cry.  Something you are not likely to forget.

Gary, Donna just about summed this up for me as well.  I try to imagine going through what my clients might be....and how they would be feeling and can usually empathize enough to get to the WHY.  For myself it takes longer on some occasions.  Definitely trying to get to the WHY will help you solve whatever issue it might be.

This reminds me of my Dale Carnegie training and the importance of digging deeper. As a mortgage planner it is also very important that I dig deeper this way, to find and help others find their true needs and desires.

Hi Gary, Thanks for the post. It's so interesting digging to the heart and the 'why' of a youngster/teenager. Once you take the time to understand what they do and why they do it, it becomes so enlightening and leads the path to a wonderful, more open relationship.
