carlsbad: More New Homes in Carlsbad at Robertson Ranch - 03/21/14 02:05 AM
Another Change in Landscape in Carlsbad
New Homes in Carlsbad at Robertson Ranch
The Carlsbad landscape is going to change again, with new Carlsbad homes taking the place of another nursery, or perhaps more correctly agricultural land.

A portion of Robertson Ranch has already been developed, with The Foothills at Carlsbad and several new home communities (Sago, Sycamore, Palo Verde, Rockrose, Alcea - these are sold out except for Palo Verde) created by different builders.
The second half of Robertson Ranch (200+ acres), along El Camino Real and south of Tamarack, was purchased by Toll Brothers and will become 672 … (3 comments)

carlsbad: Why Move to Carlsbad? No Snow! No Mosquitoes! No Humidity! - 03/19/14 12:33 AM
Why Move to Carlsbad? No Snow! No Mosquitoes! No Humidity!
I’ve had several conversations recently with people who live here, as well as those considering or planning a move, about the main reasons to buy a home in Carlsbad, apart from the terrific year-round weather and the beaches.
There is a common theme…
no snow, no mosquitoes, and no humidity.

Oh, we get snow in the mountains in Southern California, and you can see it from many vantage points in Carlsbad. On a really clear day you can see snow at Big Bear and other distant mountains. But we … (6 comments)

carlsbad: The Famed La Costa Resort and Spa is now the Omni La Costa Resort - 03/18/14 12:34 AM
The Famed La Costa Resort and Spa is now the Omni La Costa Resort

The famed La Costa Resort and Spa has been a fixture in Carlsbad, and known around the world as a premier golf and spa destination, for decades.
The La Costa Resort was acquired by Omni Hotels last year and is now known as the Omni La Costa Resort, certainly not news for anyone in the nearby residential area or who pays attention to such things.
Read more about why I like living in Carlsbad.

carlsbad: Carlsbad Flower Fields Are Open in Carlsbad California 2014 - 03/15/14 08:37 AM
Carlsbad Flower Fields Opened March 1, 2014
The famed Flower Fields in Carlsbad CA opened recently in Carlsbad and the flowers are beautiful. While they are not at their peak yet the view is still spectacular.
This very popular Carlsbad tourist attraction offers 50 acres of extraordinary color that seems to get better and better.
The Carlsbad Flower Fields are only open for a couple of months each year. This year they opened March 1 and will remain open until May 11.
It’s an opportunity to see an amazing collection of flowers (ranunculas) on a hillside overlooking the ocean, … (4 comments)

carlsbad: Carlsbad Farmers’ Market Gets Ready for Spring - 03/08/14 04:21 AM

Carlsbad Farmers’ Market Gets Ready for Spring
The Carlsbad Farmers’ Market is getting ready for spring, which as you may remember starts in just 2 more weeks on Thursday March 20.
Now held only on Wednesdays on State Street in the heart of the Village (instead of the former location on Wednesdays and Saturdays where it moved from in June 2013), the current hours for the Carlsbad Farmers’ Market of 3 – 6 pm will be expanded after Daylight Saving Time begins (yes that starts tomorrow, remember? Spring Ahead = lose 1 hour of sleep).

carlsbad: Carlsbad is Getting a New Roundabout - 02/16/14 02:01 AM
Carlsbad is Getting a New Roundabout
Carlsbad is getting a new roundabout. In fact, it’s the first roundabout in Carlsbad.
We used to call them rotaries back in New England. And there were some pretty hairy ones.
I still remember rush hour traffic heading into the city and hitting the Route 2 rotary in Cambridge (it was eliminated and replaced with a series of intersections with lights). Rotaries are not built for the faint of heart, and aggressive drivers in Boston made the rotaries a real treat. The heck with the rules of the road – the first one to … (2 comments)

carlsbad: Why You Should See, Hear, and Touch the Community When Relocating - 02/09/14 04:17 AM
Why You Should See, Hear, and Touch the Community When Relocating
Moving to an area you don’t know is a tough challenge, even if you know you want to be there, perhaps know people there, and have heard the sorts of things about the area that appeal to you.
At the risk of generalizing, I think most buyers looking for a primary home in a new area have the community at the top of the list of what’s important, not just the house.
Buyers generally buy in a particular community or neighborhood, and are not just purchasing a property, in my … (10 comments)

carlsbad: Carlsbad, The Bike Friendly Town - 02/04/14 12:37 PM
Carlsbad, The Bike Friendly Town
I have renamed Carlsbad the bike friendly town.

It’s my own doing, but based on changes in the last couple of years which reflect that Carlsbad takes toward bicyclists I thinks it’s an apt descriptor.
Carlsbad is certainly not alone. There are many communities that promote bicycling and provide an atmosphere that encourage that mode of transportation, and safety for the bikers in a busy community with a fair amount of traffic and pedestrians.
Case in point…
Carlsbad has been installing sharrows for some time, and many streets are designated streets which are to be … (3 comments)

carlsbad: Carlsbad is Getting a New Sign…Maybe - 01/26/14 01:01 PM

Carlsbad is Getting a New Sign…Maybe
Yes, it’s true. Maybe.
There is proposed new signage for the City of Carlsbad, not unlike the sign that adorns the downtown area of Encinitas to the south.
There is a public meeting on Thursday January 30 from 7:30 – 9 am at the Village Terrace Conference Room above the Daily News, located at the corner of the Coast Road (Carlsbad Boulevard) and Carlsbad Village Drive.
Come hear more about this proposed sign and gateway from the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, and share your thoughts and questions.
Can’t attend?  You can still … (8 comments)

Brian Gore, the founder of International Guitar Night, will be featured along with several other internationally-known guitarists for solos, duets, and quartets for an evening of music that is sure to please as it does every year.

The Carlsbad Marathon is Sunday January 19, 2014 in Carlsbad CA

Hard to believe we are in the new year already and it’s time for the annual Carlsbad Marathon.

The Tri-City Medical Carlsbad Marathon will take place on Sunday January 19, 2014 in Carlsbad California.

The marathon, per the website update on January 6th, is 95% full (the half marathon is sold out) so don’t waste time if you are interested in competing.

Recycle Those Carlsbad Christmas Trees Soon!

If you haven’t yet gotten rid of your Christmas tree in Carlsbad there is still time.

You can recycle your tree for free in Carlsbad in several ways if you do so by January 13th.

First, our Carlsbad trash service will pick up trees at your front yard with the normal weekly pick-up. Cut your tree so it will fit in the green recycle bin and place it at the curb. You can also cut it in half, bundle it, and leave out with the bins for pick-up.

Carlsbad is Having a Party and We are All Invited

That’s right, a big party in less than 2 weeks. They aren’t sending out individual invites so here are the details.

The Alga Norte Community Park Grand Opening in South Carlsbad is January 12, 2014. The grand opening is open to all from 10 am until 2 pm.

Alga Norte Community Park will be the biggest park in the Carlsbad system, and the most ambitious, with amenities for all (stay tuned for a run down of the camps, clinics and classes that will be available), … (5 comments)

carlsbad: Happy New Year 2014 from Carlsbad - 01/01/14 01:18 AM
It's hard to believe we are entering another year - the last one passed in a flash. There seems to be more enthusiasm and a more positive outlook as we start 2014, a nice way to start the new year.
I took this photo on one of Carlsbad's beaches near the village several years ago on New Year's Day.
Wishing everyone a year filled with special times with friends and family, and achieving those personal and professional goals that are important to you.

carlsbad: A Winter Walk on Terramar Beach in Carlsbad - 12/28/13 08:29 AM
A Winter Walk on Terramar Beach in Carlsbad

Terramar Beach in Carlsbad, less than 2 miles south of Carlsbad Village is my favorite beach, and a beautiful place for a walk.

My daughter, who was visiting for the holidays, and I took a long walk yesterday. The weather was spectacular, as it has been all week, around 70 degrees at 10 in the morning.

Terramar Beach has some amazing cliffs and rock formations, is wide and very flat, and runs below the bluff with some of the most expensive waterfront real estate in Carlsbad, and … (6 comments)

Carlsbad Bids Farewell to Fall and Welcomes Winter

Hard to believe the first day of winter is tomorrow.

In some ways we seem to have already been there, with some particularly chilly weather…for SoCal…in the last few weeks.

We can see snow on the distant mountains, and parts of our county experienced snow at the highest elevations, and with near record cold temperatures in some area.

Certainly other parts of the country have experienced significantly cold weather with storms, heavy snow, and everything you would expect at the height of winter. We can't complain.

I often … (8 comments)

Carlsbad Celebrates Holiday at the Rancho Saturday December 7, 2013

The famous Leo Carrillo Historic Ranch Park will again host the Carlsbad Holiday at the Rancho tonight from 5 to 8 pm.

This is a fun event for all and a great opportunity to also see this wonderful preserved historic ranch, formerly the hacienda for TV and movie star Leo Carrillo.

Highlighting the fun will be face painting, cookie decorating, a tree lighting ceremony, pony rides, and of course the opportunity to visit with Santa Claus.

You’ll be able to get some shopping done at the … (5 comments)

carlsbad: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas Here in Carlsbad - 12/06/13 11:56 PM
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas Here in Carlsbad

Like everywhere else I suspect, it’s beginning to look very festive in Carlsbad Village and surrounding areas.

On a quick jaunt around town the other day running business errands, with camera in tow of course, I snapped a few pics that caught my eye.

Clearly the retailers are well into celebrating the holiday season, as the Village in general is. Private citizenry, too.  I’ll be adding to my personal collection of holiday shots over the next few weeks.

Carlsbad Village Faire 2013 is November 3rd in Carlsbad CA

Yes, arts and crafts lovers, it’s time again for the famous Carlsbad Village Faire. The 40th anniversary will be celebrated this Sunday November 3rd.

The 2013 Carlsbad Village Faire will take place in downtown Carlsbad Village, on the north side of Carlsbad Village Drive along State Street and Grand Avenue, as well as on adjacent streets.

The Carlsbad Village Faire, held twice a year in the Spring and Fall, is supposedly the largest one-day outdoor fair in the country – a pretty impressive statistic for our little seaside … (4 comments)
