Why Targeted, Personalized Messaging Will Pay Off for You

By
Real Estate Technology with IXACT Contact Real Estate CRM

One should never underestimate the business-building impact of well-written emails and letters that are targeted and personalized. Time and again, they'll beat out shotgun style email campaigns. According to a great book by Daniel Goleman, entitled, "Social Intelligence: The New Science of Human Relationships," Goleman uses a social neuroscience approach to explain people's differing reactions to being treated as a "You" versus an "It." In order to be effective in messaging to clients, your communication needs to be personalized and relevant.

If you're sending out email blasts that are generic, you are missing the boat. Understand your clients' interests and develop stronger relationships with them so you can truly recognize their needs and market more effectively.  This is what Goleman means when he refers to treating people as a "You."  It's important to communicate with others in a personable way with messaging that resonates with them. When we treat people as an "It" we treat them as just another contact in our database.

I speak with Realtors everyday who would like to be doing what I've discussed above but are not because they don't have the necessary tools and systems in place to do so. IXACT Contact allows Realtors to send emails and letters to specific groups in your contact database (for example, first time buyer prospects or colleagues from an earlier career). But it goes further than that. Suppose Maria has already sent you 3 referrals. You know that she recommends your services so you think it's quite possible that more referrals will be coming down the pipe. If you know that her birthday is March 25th and that her and her two children love Broadway plays, why not send her a letter with tickets to a Broadway show?

Think about your communications with clients. Think about how your messaging makes them feel. Try to wow them with every meeting, email, and marketing piece. Undoubtedly, you'll be a much better Realtor for it.

Absolutely right, if you can hit on something that interests them personally, you are far more likely to succeed in whatever action you it is you are wanting them to take.

Great message, Rich. What is your opinion of Send Out Cards that does the work for you, yet allows you to personalize the message? I still hand write all of my notes but I know many using the Send Out Cards to try and save time. I worry that they are too impersonal.

Thanks for the post.

Jeff: Absolutely! it's proven time and time again.

Carrie: I don't see a problem with using Send Out Cards that does the work for you IF you're remembering to personalize the card. If you want to send different cards though to different groups or segments of people, it's much more time-effective in my opinion to send out communications using a contact management system. Hopefully this helps!

Personalization always works - as it helps in making a 'connection' and draws attention and interest!

Rich, I completely agree that personalization is the key.  People know when they are receiving a generic email or message, and when they receive something that is actually customized to them, personally, it really can make an impact.  Thanks for posting!

Mihir: You're right. And because it helps to establish the connection and draw interest, youe campaign will be more effective.

Kaira: My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it.

Rich, you are completely right on target!  And this was true for me just this past weekend.  I have a "Happy Home Anniversary" card that I normally send to my past clients in the month of their home anniversary!  I will generally write a handwritten note in it that is personalized to my clients!  I sent one to one of my past clients, and they referred their parents to me, who want to buy a home here in the area that they can live in several months of the year!  And their price point is upwards of a million dollars!  And this is in an area where the average sales price is mid $200,000!  So thanks for the reminder of what it takes to do business today!
