12 Things YOU Can Do Now BEFORE a Hurricane Comes.
The 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1 and is expected to be the most active since 2012. There are 14 storms, 8 hurricanes, and 3 major hurricanes projected.
The last few years have been quiet in South Florida but don’t let complacency set in.
Now is the time prepare your home and your family.
Here are 12 things you can do now BEFORE a hurricane comes.
1.Check your insurance
You need to know what is and is not covered. Actually, you should make sure you have the kind of coverage you’ll need. Remember there is a cut-off time before a hurricane is coming when policies will no longer be written.
2.Write out a plan and go over it with your family or anyone living in the house.
This is especially something you want to do if you have young children in the house. Knowing what to do can help alleviate their fears.
3.Gather all of your important numbers.
This will include insurance policy numbers, account numbers, medical information...anything you need to have in your daily life. We have so much of our information in the clouds these days, but remember, it may be stuck there in the event that you have no internet service or no power.
If you feel comfortable doing this, make a copy of this information and give it to a relative in another city.
4.Have non-perishable supplies stored
You don’t have to run out and buy up the town’s supply of peanut butter but it’s a good time to start gathering items now.
Remembering that you’ll want 1 gallon of water per person per day, you may want to purchase a few gallons every time you do your grocery shopping.
5.Know where your local shelters are.
Find out where your shelters are and what you will and will not be allowed to bring with you.
If you have pets, find out which shelters will accept pets. You’ll need to pre-register them, so it’s a good time to take care of that now.
6.Prepare your property.
Trim your trees and bushes now. The municipalities will cease picking up clippings before a hurricane.
If you have hurricane shutters learn now how to put them up. If you need help putting them up, find someone now that will do this.
Edit all of the small, unnecessary items you have around the yard, The more you have out there, the more you will have to haul in before a hurricane.
7.If you have a boat, learn how to secure it and make sure you have supplies on hand.
If you plan on moving your boat via the Intracoastal, remember that the bridges will be locked down at a certain point when a hurricane is approaching.
Buy extra rope and bumpers ahead of time.
8. If you have a generator, know how to work it before the hurricane comes!
Many homeowners now have the full house generator. Even if you do, you need to check with your propane supplier how prepared they are to resupply their customers.
If your generator is a mobile one, do not use it indoors. Read all of the instructions, now!
9.Prepare a To Go box.
You may have to evacuate. Prepare a box with what you’d need if you couldn’t get back home for more than a day.
Make a list of what you would quickly take if you had to evacuate. Remember, in an emergency, you won’t have time to wander around from room to room.
10. Gather flashlights, batteries, and charging equipment for your devices.
If you don’t already have one, a headlamp comes in really handy when the power goes out and you’re trying to make your way in the dark.
Know where your device chargers are.
And if you haven’t invested in an external power source, now would be a good time.
11. Prepare your car.
Should you need to evacuate you’ll want a vehicle you can rely on. Get it checked now!
You can also have on hand the emergency battery chargers that will also charge your devices.
12.The Extras
Don’t forget to have a reliable First Aid Kit as well as tools and supplies should you need to make repairs at home.
Start preparations now. Hurricane season begins June 1!
