Throwback and Thankful Thursday

The last of our bluebird babies fledged this week. Who can blame those little birds for wanting to leave their little box where they’ve been crammed in for several weeks! And with feel like temperatures over 100 degrees, I can see why they would want to leave.

It reminded me of two years ago when we were still living in Delray Beach.  To our surprise, chose our back yard for her maternity ward. In fact, we’d walked by her several times before we noticed her.

There were 12 eggs but sadly, none of them hatched. When it looked as if mama peahen was going to sit on them come you-know-what or high water, we waited for her to leave and removed the eggs. (which were beginning to become quite...well, you’ve smelled rotten eggs, haven’t you?)

So why Throwback and Thankful? The throwback is obvious. But I’m thankful for Mother Nature sharing this remarkable event with us.

How cool was this?

Larry used the Alfred app on his iPhone to

record movements by the peahen.

Thanks for sharing Kathy!

Its unfortunate 12 eggs were wasted! The throwback is obvious. But I’m thankful for Mother Nature sharing this remarkable event with us.

Hello Kathy - moments can be memorable for all sorts of reasons.  Melancholic as well as joyful.  Each is a part of life.

That would be hard laying 12 eggs and none hatch. I know from caring for birds they have a sense of loss when nature doesn't work well.

Great photos and story. We were blessed this year by a Dove family that laid 2 eggs and gave us two healthy babies. Like you, I walked by the mama and the eggs for likely 2 weeks before I noticed her hiding spot in one of our hanging ivy plants. Birds bless a garden and among my favorite of God's creatures.

We named them Yin & Yang, this is them at about 3 weeks after hatching and they began exploring the yard, but didn't fly off until week 4. We still see them in our neighborhood on walks occasionally.

Kathy,

I remember this tory of your pea hen and your watching hoping an egg will hatch.  Your bluebirds did well, and perhaps the next batch the pea hen had yielded babies...A

Hi Kathy Streib - I was amazed at 12 eggs.  I wonder if that beautiful bird could not cover all of those eggs causing a loss of heat for the birthing process. ??

Hi Kathy... while I'm personally not a "bird" person, I love following your bird maternity ward stories.

Sharon Lee I even called a peacock farm out west to seek their advice.

Thomas J. Nelson, Realtor e-Pro, CRS, RCS-D, Vets how lucky you were!!!!  We do get baby cardinals and woodpeckers here so I know the nests are nearby.

Roy Kelley I hope that you and Chef Dolores are staying safe as well.

Brian England we have been blessed to see baby gators being born in Florida and now bluebirds here!!!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I hope so as well. I do remember that during mating season, the peacocks and peahens are so loud!  We would have to warn any houseguests we had so they wouldn't wonder what the heck was going on in the middle of the night.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Good point. I called a peacock farm out west and learned that sometimes another peahen will lay eggs in the same nest and leave the other peahen to incubate them. I put a small dish of water and food near her but I did notice that she would leave the nest a few times during the day.

Grant Schneider Thank you.  I love watching the live cams of animals that are on the internet.

Hi Nina Hollander I have always loved watching animals. I've been known to stand forever watching ants move along a sidewalk from one place to another.
