paul campbell: Giant Brainlike Fruit that Smells Like an Orange Discovered in Wilmore! - 10/26/11 10:15 AM
Osage Orange A fruit shaped like a brain that smells like an orange.  What could it be? In walking a property yesterday that I hope to list soon I discovered a very unusual fruit?  I immediately came home and started doing some research on the internet. This fruit is not like any other.  It is adorning my kitchen table while I wait to introduce it to my grandchildren. A found a bunch of good web pages that explain the history of this fruit. This one seems the most scientific. This "brainlike fruit" seems so baffling.  Why is it so huge?  Why … (3 comments)

paul campbell: Great Service at SS Tire on Boston Road - 10/25/11 10:47 AM
Please Visit SS Tire on Boston Road

I am writing this blog as I wait to have my tire fixed at SS Tire Auto Service Center at 3650 Boston Road in Lexington.

This afternoon as I was about to leave a listing appointment in Wilmore the client discovered my tire was almost flat.  He had an air pressure tank that got me enough air to get to this shop.

I drove here because it is on my way home but it also came highly recommended by my friend Mike Baldwin.

The manager is Joe Durkin.  Joe … (1 comments)

paul campbell: Gasoline Prices - Are they affected by Housing Prices? - 10/23/11 02:01 PM
Just Wondering?  Are Gas Prices Indicative of Local Housing Markets?  I drove home this afternoon from Michigan after a wonderful visit with our daughter.   On our way to Ann Arbor I had noticed that gas prices were much lower than they are in Lexington.   Therefore I planned to make sure I filled the tank in central Ohio on our way south on I-75.   The further we travelled away from Michigan the more prices of gasoline seemed to be dropping.  I knew that prices in Lexington and Ann Arbor were similar so I assumed as I got closer to … (0 comments)

paul campbell: Opportunities to Plant a Tree and Breath a Little Easier - 10/23/11 01:29 AM
Opportunities to Help Plant Trees

One of my great joys in the fall is raking leaves.  Am I crazy?

While raking I always have this deep sense of the presence of God.  Falling leaves remind me of the story of the manna God provided in the desert.  Leaves are manna for the earth.  The falling leaves are the essential ingredient to the topsoil here in Lexington.  These thoughts remind me of these lines from Wendell Berry's poem.

Invest in the millenium. Plant sequoias.

paul campbell: Surprising Foods, Taking It for Granted - 10/22/11 03:11 AM
A Breakfast Cereal Worth Sharing and a Reminder that Nature is Full of Surprises

This morning my daughter served us Kasha for breakfast.  It was a pleasing pallette experience that completely surprised me.  If my understanding is correct Kasha is a roasted buckwheat that originated in Russia.

I have grown buckwheat as a cover crop for many years.  Buckwheat will germinate in the summer quickly and grow enough mass in a month so that when worked into the soil it is a terrific way to boost organic matter.  It is soft and brittle enough that it can easily be … (1 comments)

paul campbell: The Older I Get the More I Need to Learn - 10/21/11 03:30 PM
This Grandfather is Always Learning Something New about Technology

Today my wife and I took our grandson Sam to the Fire Museum in Ipsalanti Michigan.  My daughter gave me the address and said just use your phone GPS to get there dad.  Since we are driving a rental car and I am too frugal to rent a GPS I really had little choice.

So I went to maps on my android, typed in the address and hit the search button.  I expected to find a map with the obligatory blue line and sure enough I did.  I carefully manuevered … (8 comments)

paul campbell: The Real Estate Market is Different in States, Cities, Towns, and even subdivisions. - 10/21/11 03:03 PM
The Real Estate Market Varies Greatly by State, Regions, Cities and Subdivisions.

I am visiting my daughter in Michigan this week end.  Of course I am always interested in what is happening in the real estate market.  One of the very noticeable things about Ann Arbor is that there are large sections of the town where you rarely see any homes for sale.

This is just another reminder that The Real Estate Market Varies Greatly by State, Regions, Cities and Subdivisions.

So when we read news articles about real estate trends in the United States … (4 comments)

paul campbell: Garden report, DE is working and 18 inch cucumbers. - 06/27/11 06:44 AM
Hi Gardening Friends, Mostly I want to share this video with you and give you an update on what is happening in the garden. I harvested two Shantung Suyo cucumbers this weekend that were 18 inches long.  This is one of the few hybrid seeds I grow.  I stumbled upon the seed at Fedco a few years ago.  It is never bitter, grows rapidly and taste so sweet that I cannot resist it even though it is a hybrid. Just a note about diatomaceous earth (DE) and how it is helping control those awful borers.  I have lost one cucumber to … (2 comments)

paul campbell: Forty years with the same women. Crazy? Yes! - 06/18/11 01:53 PM
Forty years ago at the age of 21 years and 3 days old I married my first and only serious girlfriend.  Kathy was only 19 and willing to marry a poor Idaho boy who was in the Army during Viet Nam. We stuffed our meager belongings into our diminuative Datsun pickup and coaxed it all the way to Fort Riley Kansas from North Idaho. Our marriage survived not only living the army life but also me teaching Kathy to drive that straight stick Datsun.  On one occasion while jerking our way up a hill in Manhattan Kansas a police officer stopped … (2 comments)

paul campbell: The Joy of Spring at Possum Trot - 04/23/11 04:13 AM
Last week I had the opportunity to visit Possum Trot with an excellent videographer, Chad Rumford.  The dogwoods were beginning to bloom, the azaleas teased us with their first florescent buds breaking open, the lobelia was trailing over the rock walls and the beauty of the deciduous forest dressing themselves with new buds was stunning. We were treated to the surprise of a large flock of turkeys as we made our way up to the wigwam.  This property is a magnificent treasure of water features, rolling hills, meadow land and numerous buildings that can function as a retreat center, a hunting … (3 comments)

paul campbell: Preparing for an Ice Storm in Lexington Kentucky - 12/15/10 12:23 PM
Preparing for an Ice Storm in Lexington Kentucky The forecast for tonight is snow changing to sleet and finally freezing rain.  I grew up in the Pacific Northwest where in my 58 years of experience I remember one time when freezing rain caused a problem. I have been here only a couple of years and this will already by my third ice storm if it comes to fruition. These are the things  I have learned about preparing for an ice storm in Lexington. First, a quarter of an inch of ice causes major havoc.  Trees become peanut brittle like and they … (3 comments)
