Mike Mathews shares his story...
In 1997, I had never even heard of the Internet. I took my first job as a graphic designer and was plopped down in front of what was considered a state of the art computer. To service these PCs you needed a specialist and, believe it or not, those specialists charged $500 per hour. After several $1500+ repair bills, I decided to investigate.
Every time we had a problem, their solution was to completely erase our computer drives and start over from scratch, a process that only takes couple of hours. They spent their time surfing the Internet until they had accrued enough time and then just erased the PC's drives.
It was time for me to learn how to fix my own PCs. Unfortunately, everything I found was confusing and intimidating at best. I gave up and resigned to being swindled by the PC thieves.
I took a job as Senior Multimedia Designer for a large studio in Boulder, CO, the computers I needed to do my job were considerably more powerful and considerably more expensive. My new office was located next door to the tech support team.
On occasion I noticed these guys bringing in PCs that looked like something out of Star Wars. Curiosity got the better of me and I asked how much a beast like that would cost.
My jaw dropped when they told me and to my surprise the price was about 1/3 that of my own super computer in my personal studio. As a designer, I was well aware that my business and the tools needed to conduct my business were only going to get more expensive as time went on. I made a decision. I walked into their office and offered them each a complete design package for their own tech support businesses.
Logo's, websites, brochures, the whole nine yards... on one condition, they had to teach me how to build and fix PCs. For the next 3 years they showed me the ropes. Today, I build my own Star Wars computers for my design, animation and recording studio at home. I repair any issues with my PCs quickly, efficiently and for no more than the cost of the pieces of hardware.
I'm a multimedia design artist and consultant for companies like Jim Beam Brands, Johnson & Johnson and NBC. In all of my studios, I'm the senior designer and the resident PC tech or "Computer Guy". When my daughter Mia was born, we moved to Berea KY. After growing up in a small town in Iowa, I knew that I wanted to raise her in a place where I could trust and talk to neighbors. The life of a professional designer is a little to busy to allow me to be a father, so I only do designing part time now.
I decided that there were probably plenty of people like me who were sick of being swindled by PC repair companies. Buying expensive laptops that stopped working after a couple years. Getting viruses on their PCs even though they had anti-virus software installed. Finally, being told that the only way to fix anything was to completely erase their hard drives, loose all of their files and start over.
So here I am in Kentucky! I used to be called an artist, now people call me a geek... but you can call me Mike.
