Take your shoes off or leave them on?

By
Home Builder with The Flooring Girl

How many times have you been to your friends' house, ready for an enjoyable evening only to be told at the door by your smiling friend "take your shoes off"? Well, one of the dirty little secret of the carpet industry is just this...keeping your shoes off might actually result in you shortening the life of your carpet when compared to your guests wearing their shoes.

Here is why....going shoeless on carpets actually transfers bodily oils into the carpet fibers that over time cause dirt to attach to the carpet fibers, and even regular vacuuming and steam clean won't remove the oils. The results is that repeated use only builds up a mix of oils and dirt that eventually weakens carpet fibers, and yes, eventually shortening the true life of your carpet.

Now, usually for hardwood, the opposite is true.  Taking your shoes off will prolong the life of your hardwood as it substantially reduces scratches.

So the next time you visit a friend, and they ask you to "take your shoes off", look down at their floors first to see if they have carpet or hardwood.

----------------------

Addendum based on comments - this was meant to be a bit off the cuff.  I'm not suggesting getting into an argument w/ your friends and certainly there are many cultural reasons for removing shoes and that trumps all.  Just trying to provide some advice to help you all preserve the life of your own floors.

Al & Peggy - LOL.  Yes, I get several customers who insist I keep my shoes on.  Sometimes they are just being polite.  Sometimes I wonder if it's because they think my feet are dirty.  Because I work on floors I try to be extra respectful of the floors

Kathy - Good, I'm glad.  You know, you just reminded me that I should at some point do a post on the importance of carpet cleaning.  That will preserve the life of your carpets, too.

Debbie, I am so glad you cleared up this one!  So it's OK to walk on the wood floors, but probably we should avoid stepping barefooted on the oriental rugs?

Yes, Patricia, that's exactly correct.  And, okay to wear socks on oriental rugs.

Oh, and next time you get carpet, see if there's some extra that can be bound into area mats at the doorways.  Those areas get dirty the fastest and often cause the carpet to get replaced.

We also take our shoes off at home as do most of our friends.  Our family, up North, however all keep their shoes on and think we are 'weird' when we remove our shoes upon entering their homes.  We lived in Japan for 3 years and just got into the habbit, but then found that it really did keep our floors & carpets cleaner.

I normally remove my shoes whenever I see the homeowner barefoot or with socks.  You are correct about the oils on the carpet however wearing shoes indoors is considered poor manners in some cultures.

Maureen - You're right, everyone has their own their own way and often thing the other way is weird.

Leolinda - Yes, I think that's a good bet - follow the other person's lead.  Also, if you see lots of shoes at the door, that's a sign you should take your shoes off.

Oh here I thought you were going to talk about the dirt factor? You know the 'can you clean my floors with your socks types'?  They never clean but have your socks do it for them?  Here's another great reason to bring that to their attention.

MAkes sense to me! I like to leave street dirt at the door. Also barefoot or with socks, it's a lot quieter!

Your friend said to take your shoes off...not your socks.  With the dirt and grime outside it is a pleasure to go into a house and being requested to take off my shoes.  It shows that they care about their home and don't want your muddy feet being dragged in!

Michael - That's great.  Love hardwood.

Peggy - Good.

Simon - I guess it depends on whether you are wearing socks underneath or sandals.  Typically, in the summer I wear sandals, so there are no socks.  Oh, and great pt about showing that they care about their home.  You are so right.

You are right, but you know I just love walking around in barefeet, it is so much more comfortable.  A friend of mine just takes little sock slippers, even when she does showings.

Hi Lesley.  Oh, yes, I'm usually barefoot too in my own place, esp the bedroom.  I know I'm doing the wrong thing.  But, I still wanted to spread the word.

Some of my sellers are particularly sensitive to people tracking i dirt on their carpets, so I have a container of booties by the front and back doors at those listings, and a little sign that asks people to please put the booties on over their shoes while they are in the house.  I think it can be embarrassing for some people to take their shoes off, and booties solve the problem.  I buy them in quantity from our Realtor Association store.

Susan - That sounds like a great solution for everyone involved.  And, yes, you really do need to be respectful when it is someone else's home that you are showing.

Debbie.....my family is conditioned to taking off their shoes.....I have never asked guest to do that, but most do on their own....thanks for fixing that link.

You're welcome Barbara.  Thx for pointing out the issue.  Oh, and yes, we often ask our family to do things but not our guests.  Makes perfect sense.

Take your shoes off and squish in oils.  Keep them on and squish in dirt.  Either way, the carpet is screwed!

So, what to do?  The horror, the horror...
