reblogging

There has been some big discussion of lately about reblogging. Not sure if you have read Bob Stewart'spost : reblogs now reqquire commentary- The new news is that you must write 25 or more words in your introduction when reblogging now. Hey, it's a start and a good idea. But why weren't rebloggers doing this in the first place?  Lazy?  Didn't care? Wanted to make the post look like their own post, original? There has been some good discussion within Bob's post and some excellent ideas and such.

So, do some of you even know what reblogging is all about? Reblogging is basically copying an original post with the author's permission onto your own blog site. Active Rain made it easy with a click of a button. I get into more detail with this post, What is reblogging and how can it help you.

The problem that has occurred is that there have been many members that have not given even one sentence in the introduction when announcing a reblog. And it's gone a tad further to where we even seem to have some serial rebloggers, that over 75% of their posts on their site is a reblog. What will consumers think of you if you don't write your own material?  Don't get me wrong, I personally think reblogging is a great idea and an asset for both the original author and the person reblogging it. But why can't someone give that original author kudos and explain why that particular post is being reblogged... and giving that author credit. It sounds simple but apparently some members have abused this and Active Rain has decided to try something new and I applaud them for this.  But will 25 pts be the answer?

The answer....  I don't think so.... again, read Bob's post and many of the comments.  I think some rebloggers will just have a copied statement for all post that they reblog.  Just as some do when leaving comments on your posts.  You can usually tell when this happens, and doesn't it kind of anger you?  Wouldn't you feel the same when someone does this with your own post, when you put sweat and tears into your work??

Conclusion :How do you feel about all fo this?  What would you rather see take place?  To save you some of the trouble with reading all the comments in Bob's post, here is a quick list.

  • Maybe have Active Rain add a copied statement that appears in the introduction about the original author or showing that it was a reblog. Because what would stop the person reblogging the post from making it sound like their own.
  • Make it 50 words, because 25 words wouldn't be enough and that the reblogger could just have a copied statement making the reblog sound like theirs.
  • I stated that they should make the via link that shows the authors name and link much larger. And that they should add the original authors picture up top, next to the link. Here is my full comment. Jeff Belonger's comment # 74.
  • Some mentioned that it should be up to the person reblogging. But wait, that hasn't really work and is that fair to the original author.
  • The reblogger shouldn't be awarded the 25 pts that you get for reblogging. Or that person should be limited to 5 reblogs a week. I think the limit is like 10 a week now. Could any AR god's confirm this?
  • Patricia Kennedy is onto something with this comment. Giving the original author credit for the comments on the reblog. Patricia's comment # 123.
  • Some have said to disable the comments on the reblog. I say no to this. It allows me to go back to the post and thank that person for reblogging my own material. And it allows me to see what others are saying. Because keep this in mind, not all of those commenting on that reblog would have taken the time to go to that original author's post. Just a good gut feeling that I have on this one.

So Active Rain members, what do you say?  What would you like to add to this?

Reblogging - Do you pay it forward it forward in your reblog?  Or to those that reblog your post?

I agree with it.  Even on my comments I always tried to add something real.  I see so many people that obviously are checking in to get their 10 comments asap and get out.  Half the time, they don't even add something in the right context!

I have actually yet to reblog something but there are a few posts that qualify.  Good post!

I love the fact that the original writer is now actually getting VISIBLE credit for the blog.  I have never reblogged, but my own blogs have been reblogged twice in the last week.  However, the reblogs are getting more comments than my original blog!  By the time people read through them, they forget that it is a reblog!  And NOW, I will copy this comment to the original blog as I did not forget that this was a reblog.  : )

I like the reblog feature.  I have no problem with a mandatory introduction.  There should be an introduction, I agree.  It's lazy not to add one.  As far as how many per week, I don't have an opinion on that.  I definitely think the reblog should be open for comments.  It's weird when I go to a reblog and because comments have been disable I can't comment.  I agree if reblogged (which is a compliment) it would be nice to go back and thank the person who reblogged.  You make some great points, thanks,

There is no right or wrong here.

It's an honor to be re-blogged and some times there is just nothing to add, some times the commentor is wise enough to know it is important, but that he can't add to the discussion.

It's now a mute point you must included 25 words. One...

I missed this blog post, so I am glad that you reblogged it. I think that it is important to introduce the reblog and put it in the context of your own blog (for example, say how the writer is connected to you and/or why the topic is important to your readers as well). Since there are many lazy AR members, this might at least get them to write twenty five words of original material.

Jeff is asking about  the limit on weekly reblogging, a good question. I have a feeling that some people reblog instead of writing comments, because if is faster to push the button, and voila, and then there is an added bonus of getting comments on the reblog.

Hello Bill - I read your reblog and didn't understand it clearly until I went to the original Bob postand read the post and all 195 comments.  I left my newbie perspective comment #196.  Regards - Mark

I think when re-blogging, at least a twenty-five word introduction should be mandatory.  Personally, I favor at least a 50 word introduction.  Adding a paragraph or two sharing just WHY the re-blogger is re-sending the original writer's blog... is a great thing to know.  It really ADDS to the re-blog, and makes it not only more personal, but more credible.

I think it's a GOOD change. Consumers were getting confused as to who the original author was. It was being abused, clearly.

Greg post, sir!
