This is something I strongly agree on and hope that many do take heed off. It is also for your own good if you understand how it works. For comments please do post to Jim's original post.

Check your contractors' licenses
if you're having work done at your home

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoCalifornia is not known as a business-friendly state, which I'm sure is part of the state's budget problem since many businesses are fleeing to other states and taking their tax base with them. Part of the problem is the paperwork burdens and fees required to operate a business in California. Small businesses and family operations just can't afford the time to complete all the paperwork and don't have the money to hire someone to do it, nor do they have the money to pay all the various fees associated with working in the city, county, and state.

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoContractors working on our homes are often found to be negligent in applying for and renewing their licenses, and they are often the subject of enforcement stings. Recently, law enforcement officials arrested 111 people in a statewide enforcement sting. They posed as homeowners and community volunteers seeking bids on various home and building projects ranging from tree trimming and painting to pool construction.

Of the 111 people arrested statewide, 9 were arrested in San Diego County for illegal advertising (contractor's license must be on the advertising) and contracting without a license. They represent seven companies:

  • http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoA-1 Custom Shower Door, El Cajon
  • David's Handyman Service, San Diego
  • Ground Control Landscape, El Cajon
  • Handyman Hollister, San Diego
  • Harley Home Services, San Diego
  • Landscape Design and Project Management, San Diego
  • Mendez Remodeling, Spring Valley

http://www.missionvalleycondos.infoUnlicensed contractors won't be carrying workers' compensation insurance, a significant business expense, so if a worker is injured on your property, you might be paying the medical bills. Also, if you have problems with the work, you have little recourse with unlicensed contractors.

A contractor's license is required for work bids higher than $500, and it is up to the public to make sure companies are licensed. You can check the California State License Board web site or call 800-321-2752.
