Eat Your Veggies!

It only takes 15 to 20 days to grow butterhead lettuce, romaine or spinach on a windowsill.  So, when weather permits, why not try and grow your own?  Follow these easy steps:

1.  Find a few long, narrow boxes.  The cardboard boxes that window blinds come in work well.

2.  Plant three long rows in each one, using a good quality potting mix.

3.  Place boxes ina warm place, such as near a heating vent, just until plants sprout.  Then move boxes to the windowsill; water and harvest.  Most of your plants will look, and taste, delicious in about 2 wks!

Love it! This is definitely something we are talking about doing this year. We may even get some chickens. Pretty satisfying to grow and eat your own and then you don't have to worry about pesticides, herbicides and hormones as much. Great job!

Kristin,

That's a great idea!  Now, if only I had enough window space.  The potted plants I brought indoors are taking up a lot of room by the windows right now.

Very good tip, Kristin!  I sure don't remember vegetables growing that fast in my forced labor days as a child gardener!  What can be better than fresh romaine lettuce on a sandwich?

Hi Kristin,

I love growing my own vegetables and you are right, lettuce grows so fast!!  I always have a rotation of lettuce growing.  I think I'm having a greenhouse built this year too.  I'm looking forward to watching your Badgers tomorrow!!  Happy New Years!  Cindy

Cindy, my hubby is a badger fan bigtime, so I am sure I will work while he does that....I am envious of your greenhouse!  Cool!

Gita, glad you will take a shot at it too, like me next year!

The RIGHT CHARLOTTE REALTOR!

Hi Kristen!  As you know, my hubby is in a wheelchair and just thoroughly enjoys taking care of the house plants.  So, this year for our anniversary, I got him a wide variety of patio vegies and you would have thought I gave him a million dollars!  He babied those plants until they produced and then found a variety of online recipes for me to use his 'babies' in and was just a hog in heaven!  He is missing his outdoor tasks of his patio garden and this is JUST the thing I need to tide him over until the spring.  Thanks SO much for this--I had NO earthly (pun-intended!) that there was something so delicious that he could grow indoors during the winter!

Happy New Year to you and yours!
