One of my Facebook friends mentioned the other day that she has kept track of every book she's read since she was 13 years old.  She's close to my age (maybe a bit younger), so this struck me as an amazing feat, especially considering the year she probably started and the technology available back then.  I thought it would be cool to begin doing the same thing, albeit when I'm 40 instead of a teenager.

I hesitate slightly to mention this, but I decided recently to invest in a couple of pair of reading glasses, which could even accelerate my reading speed.  They aren't necessary all the time, but some text certainly seems smaller than it used to be.  :)

What got me started?  Well, I saw several people talking about Julien Smith's post entitled, "How to Read a Book a Week in 2011", which made me start to wonder about how many books I read in an average year.

This year, we'll find out.

I also decided today to ask my two older kids if they would be interested in participating as well, to make it a sort of family book club.  Since we homeschool our kids, I thought it would also be a fun addition to our normal curriculum.  I told them that I would provide prizes for every 5th book that they read. The only stipulation is that comic books don't count (they would break the bank quickly).

They are 12 and almost 10, so it could be interesting for them to look back and see:

  • the quantity of books they've read over the years
  • the actual books themselves, since it would demonstrate where their interests were at any given time

My guess is that I typically average more than a book per week, but I may be wrong.  I know that I read about 10 over the past two months or so, since I ended up making a stack on one of our bookshelves in the bedroom.

So, if you're game, join us on this journey.  If you need a tool to help along the way, you can consider using GoodReads.com or the Facebook Booktracker application.  I might use the latter myself, or (since I am remarkably old-school when it comes to keeping track of stuff like this) I might just use a blank document or a spreadsheet on my computer.  My daughter got excited and made a chart to use for hers.

There are few skills that are as important as reading, so I am challenging myself and my kids a little bit.  It's already working. My son surprised me by picking up one of books I got him for Christmas and quickly reading five chapters earlier today.  My daughter decided to start "A Wrinkle in Time".  Good stuff!

Steve - I'm not surprised that you are a reader.  :)  I'll be interested to see which books I finish this year, and how many of them.

Kay - You don't have to read 52 books this year to join us.  :) I just thought it would be fun to push ourselves a little bit.

Jason: Great one... I think I should join the challenge too . I'm also going to ask my girls if they want to join, but you know that I have to give them a BIG reward to take part in it. I wish I could read one book a week. I guess I have to work on my speed reading.

Hi Jason. I list all of the books that I read and keep it in a binder. It's challenging because they are non-fiction. Some people read many fiction which in some ways can be a bit easier. Reading is fundamental... and I do make time for it. I'm not a huge fan of using apps though. Just my personal preference but this is a great idea. If people want to read they can start and record whatever books they decide to read. Great idea.

Jason- what a great way to involve the children.  I actually started a spread sheet years ago.  I don't have a Kindle but recently put some Kindle books on my Droid.  I even read a few pages when I'm drying my hair!  I love every opportunity I have to read, however lately I've found myself doing an awful lot of reading on ActiveRain!!

My daughter actually has a running list, one of her teachers mentioned that she did something similar.  She's been keep a list of what she wants to read as well.  There would be a period of time I could go back and look at all my Amazon transactions, but that would only be a short chunk of time.

Wow, Jason.. I had no idea you home schooled your kids. I feel terrible saying this, but I've probably read about 3 books in the last 15 years. Reading for long periods of time puts me to sleep and makes me irratable I guess this is why I enjoy AR so much. I can pop around all over the place and enjoy different subject mattes with different material. I also enjoy magazines with big pretty pictures. HaHa. I know.. I know... "you don't care."

Have a great week Jason.

This reminded me of the speed reading class I took in college!  You can read very quickly if you scan the beginning and end of each sentence and concentrate on the middle... If I remember correctly that is the method.  I can go quickly if I put my mind to it and really enjoy  sitting outside in the spring and summer in the lounge chair and reading :)

I love to read and now with ipad and amazon books reading has never been easier and more fun.  I don't even need cheater readers as I can make the PAGE HUGE.  Perhaps you could go real old school and just create a huge stack of books.  Be sure to brace it in the corner.

Really I think it's awesome when kids read-- follow the example... which I guess my kids can't tell I'm reading, except when I read I do NOTHING ELSE>

I wish I would have started a list way back when. I read a minimum of one book a week and 6 or 7 when I am on vacation. It would be a blast to go back and see how many I have read and the titles.

I take about 6-8 books out of the library on a variety of subjects, 2-3 times a month always non-fiction, and have been doing so since I was in grade school.   My mom got me into the habit.  I don't read all of them, sometimes I run out of time or I just don't find the book interesting or I only find parts of the book interesting.  I used to have a widget on my blog that showed the books I was reading.  I may put that up again as it can start an interesting discussion with others.

Greg - I DO care.  :)  I guess I'm surprsed that you didn't know we homeschool.  I've written about it quite a bit here on AR, but it's been awhile.  Maybe this is the year for you to read more books.

I love my Kindle!  I have what I have read since I have purchased it, along with notes.  I love to read and I actually have to remember to go to bed!  Great challenge for your family.  So many people don't read.  I think readers are created!  You are doing your part.

Hi Jason - I wish I had kept track of all my books.  My book club did that for the ones we read, but we disbanded, much to my dismay.  I love my Sony Reader, but ebooks from the library haven't kept pace with the need, but I am sure all that is about to change.  I have heard that GoodReads is great for cataloging and I will check it out.
