Sunday at the Beach

Some things are timeless.  Beaches and the ocean are among those things for me.  While walking along the beach at Pine Island in Hernando County, Florida, I came across this shell of another ancient creature.

Someone had found this horseshoe crab shell and placed it on a nearby seawall.  Completely intact, the light was reflecting on the shell and although the living creature had long gone from it, it's still an odd but beautiful example of Florida nature!

Great Picture!  But I have to say I would scream and run if I saw one of those things - how wonderful that you can find the beauty in it!

I have been fascinated by horseshoe crabs from the first time I saw a photo of one.  I've not seen one in person, but find it amazing that they look like a perfectly designed helmet of some sort.  It's almost as if their existence should come from an assembly line, rather than nature:-)

Li, yes, there's something were calming about the waves, the sounds, and even the smell of the ocean!

Brenda, they are harmless!  They just look odd.  Certain times of the year, you can see them mating.

Myrl, you are not alone!  In Japan it's actually named after the helmet of a samurai!  It's funny how we take certain things for granted, while I've seen horseshoe crabs quite frequently, I'm sure there are things in your world that would totally amaze me!

Silvia, Great photo on a warm beach....Horseshoe crabs is one creature of this world that has not changed with time.  I have seen their spring laying of eggs on a New Jersey beach and there are thousands of them that come ashore to mate and lay their eggs in the sand as thousands of birds mirgrating north feast on their eggs...A feeding frenzy, as these slow moving creatures provide the food so vital to the survival of so many birds.

Gloria, I saw a documentary not too long ago about horseshoe crabs and how some bird species depend on them for survival.  Actually, it was the Red Knot they were talking about and yes, they do come to New Jersey to feed.  And here you are, telling me you've actually watched them!  I so appreciate your comment, you can't possibly know!

Karen, I know, they totally look prehistoric but that's because they are!  Somewhere I read they have been around for more than 400 million years and changed relatively little!

Donna!  I think it looks beautiful!  Now, if I could play in it, that would be nice.  But having to go to work would not be too much fun!  Thanks for sharing the pic, I like it!

Silvia - I grew up spending my summers in Long Island and there were hundreds of enormous horseshoe crabs (so prehistoric looking). Me and my older sister used to chase my younger sister down the beach with them holding them by their tail because she was so afraid of them. (not too nice, but at the time is was so funny) Ironically, the big ones can't hurt you, but step on a baby one and they have razor sharp barbs that slice your feet open. I found this out while clamming with my dad.

Thank you Emily!  Now, the real question is, why do car manufactures have to come out with a different model every year? :-)

Kristine, I didn't know that about the baby ones but then, I've never really seen a really small one like that neither!  Interesting!

The first time I saw a horseshoe crab was at an aquarium. That’s when I found at that they are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than crabs.

Jim, and did you know that the horseshoe crab also served as an inspiration for some of the creatures in the Alien movie? :-)
