Awards

Real Estate Agent with Atlanta Communities 303302

I have wallpaper on my cubical walls. Well, not real wallpaper, but "Certificates of Achievement". They are issued by my office for most closings, pendings, and listings during the month. As these are issued I have been putting them up on my cubicle walls. At first it was pretty much because I did not know what to do with them. Now, I Crave them!

For such a simple little thing, a piece of paper with a little color thrown in, I have become obsessed with them. I need them. I want them! Good grief, it's just a piece of paper! Yes, but it is small reaffirmation that all the work my partner and I do everyday is somewhere appreciated.

My team, The Community Realty Group, is comprised of myself and my partner Beth Campbell. She thinks I am silly for lusting after the wallpaper. But I have to tell you, we received notification yesterday that we again received the Honor Society award from Prudential, and she absolutely puts this piece of paper on her cubicle wall!

So, awards, as silly as they can sometimes seem, are really a motivator for some people. It's Ok to take pride in them. While my partner and I may covet different pieces of paper, we both handily agree that referrals, recommendations from clients, and of course paychecks are always appreciated more than the awards!

Great post, Peter.  Referrals and client recommendations are awards of the "most awesome" kind. We just aren't able to post them on our cubicles, but we can put the paper they generate in our billfolds.  :)  DJ

Peter I am so glad to hear that I not the only one secretly coveting these little pieces of colorful paper. I find they are a great motivator, kind of like a little reminder that “yes I can”.

I think awards on the wall, let clients know you are a worker and not a slacker!

I think of them as little progress reports. When there are gaps, what were you doing? Recognition gives meaning to our jobs between paychecks.

Rob & Glenn - I agree. Just always thought it was just me getting a little thrill out of a piece of paper. Didn't think anyone else much cared!

It is the best to be recognized and honored, as human beings I think we all want this.

Recently, the Portland Monthly Magazine in Portland, Oregon hired a company to survey Realtors in the greater Portland Metro Area. It is a survey called the 2011 FIVE STAR Real Estate Agent award. The national survey company surveyed by mail and telephone, people who had purchased homes over $100,000.  More than 54,000 households from the period of August 2007 to August 2010 were surveyed as well as 7,000 subscribers of Portland Magazine plus an additional 250 surveys to mortgage brokers and title companies.  There were 9 criteria that people were asked to comment on and then name the Real Estate agent they felt qualified.  The agents were reviewed by a blue ribbon panel comprised of realty company executives, professional trade association officers and other individuals directly involved in housing related businesses.  There were less than 7% that were chosen out of a large number of Realtors in this area.  I was one of the ones chosen, and frankly it blew me away.  It is a blessing and an honor.  The results will be published in the upcoming 2011 April issue of the Portland Monthly magazine.  This is something this company does all over the US, just a first for Portland.

So I agree recognition is a wonderful thing.  Thanks for the post.
