St Patricks DaySt. Patrick's Day Observations on Real Estate Luck

Luck.  Good luck.  Bad Luck.  No luck at all.  That lucky dog!

Some people believe heavily in luck, some not so much...those engineers and data driven people, you know who you are!

We're believers in making our own luck.  Decisions made and actions executed go a long way towards creating our own luck!  In real estate, luck doesn't really have that much to do with the successful sale or purchase of a home.

Sellers start making their own luck when they first purchase their home years prior.  Did they pick a good neighborhood?  Great schools?  Not overpay?  Not take the worst lot in the neighborhood just to get a "good buy"?  Not use their home as an ATM machine for new cars, boats and vacations?  Do value added updates to the home?  Keep up with maintenance?

And when the Sellers are ready to sell their home, did they do their best to prepare their home for the market?  Fresh paint, maybe carpet, declutter and stage?  Select a REALTOR® with a track record of success and a strong marketing plan?  Listen to their REALTOR® and price competitively?  Cooperate with showings once on the market?   (YES, it's a pain, but we never told you it would be EASY).  Negotiate in good faith and not out of emotion? (YES, the offer is INSULTINGLY LOW, but let's at least give them an opportunity to come up!)  Be flexible with closing date and occupancy date?  And this list goes on....

All this and more creates "LUCK".  The neighbor down the street NOT doing these things may be crying about how UNLUCKY they are while you're signing papers at the closing table!

Buyers create their own luck too!  By realizing credit and finance work needs to be done UP FRONT, not after finding the dream house.  By selecting ONE agent to work with, one that WILL work for them to find that home!  By figuring out their MUST HAVES and NICE TO HAVES.  By recognizing paint and wallpaper can be changed, and the seller's "stuff" leaves with them!  By being prepared to act IMMEDIATELY once they find the right home!  By being willing to write a FAIR offer instead of trying to STEAL every home!  By understanding older homes aren't going to be perfect....and maybe not newer homes either.  By having a good inspector to protect their interests.  By being willing to work through the obstacles to closing.

These Buyers will have the keys to their new home while other buyers are crying about how unlucky they are and how the homes they want keep getting sold to OTHER buyers!

And REALTORS®?  We make our own luck too!  By working hard every day, earning that reputation that gives our sellers and buyers a reason to recommend us to their friends and family!  By prospecting for new business!  By developing a marketing plan that gives the Sellers a reason to choose YOU over the other 6,000 agents in your market area!  By blogging, by social media, by that strong Web presence that helps potential buyers and sellers find us!  By recognizing what works, what doesn't and adapting your plans!  By continually learning!  By ANSWERING the phone!  By responding to emails!  And the beat goes on.....

The REALTORS® that do these things and more, will be the "lucky" ones while their competitors stand around the water cooler grousing about how bad the market is!

So do you want to make your own luck today?  Work at it! :)

Luck?  Do I believe in luck?  I believe in blessings which come as a result of faith and works.  I was taught to pray as if everything depends on God and to work as if everything depends on you.  As the scriptures say, "Faith without works is dead."  With faith and works, the mountain can be moved.

Have a great Saint Patrick's Day!  Yes, I am wearing green, and I'm willing to work for my pot of gold.

Gary, It's something we've sometimes wondered about coming in trying to sell a home later....what happened that their agent didn't protect them more on the front side?  We've entered some homes where the overpayment was so high on the purchase side that there's nothing we can do to help them recover.

Luck was defined years ago to me as the following:

Labor
Under
Correct
knowledge

I believe that was the best characterization of it, ever. Luck is not random good fortune. You make your own luck.

Phil, Like your definition!  Hadn't heard it before, but it aligns with Glenn's Seneca quote.  And agreed, we make our own luck.

There is a lot of truth in what you say about making your own luck.  Other agents seem to think that things just come easily to me...they just fall in my lap.  Maybe sometimes that is true, but most of the time, it is because I have worked very hard in the past 8 years to build a reputation of integrity and results.  There is no luck to that!

I have this quote at my office, in my car and in my home:

"Luck is a matter of preparation meeting opportunity"-Oprah Winfrey

Joni, It's HARD to be this LUCKY!!  to slightly paraphrase a movie quote!

Karen, Uh oh...looks like Oprah is borrowing Seneca's quote! :)  And much of our luck comes the same as yours, years of developing our reputation via work with past clients, integrity and results get you referrals, those clients that just "magically" fall into our laps!

Sometimes I do feel really lucky, but I know how hard I have worked to get "lucky".

Brian, It's a profession where we have a lot of influence on our "luck".  The last year reading and participating heavily on AR has taught us tremendous amounts of information that are useful.  Amazing how "lucky" we've been when a topic comes up with a potential client that we'd just read a post about within the previous couple of days :)

Gina, We can influence our luck exactly the way you mention, work applied efficiently certainly helps!

Scott, Thanks!  Not a bad day overall, hope you're was great too!

Chuck, There's always some element of true luck, but from a professional standpoint I do feel like we manufacture most of our luck.  The definitions Glenn and Phil provided fit my thoughts very well.

Luck is not really luck.  We make our own "luck" by hard work & working at what we know how to do!!! I like the word blessed better than luck.
