Have You Heard? It's Been Raining here on the Peninsula Lately!

Have you heard? It's been raining here on the Peninsula lately -- lots of rain

Today the skies are blue, the sun benignly warm, and the hills a gorgeous green. But as recently as yesterday we had rain, day after day of rain, which is good for the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and our water source, but it does wreak havoc on our trails. Mud and downed trees can be formidable obstacles!

But a little mud can't keep us inside--our fabulous parks and open spaces is one the drawing cards of this area. We like to be outside, 12 months of the year. Sunday's hike at nearby Pulgas Open Space Preserve was, well, muddy! But also glorious, with wildflowers blooming in profusion. Dogs were frolicking happily, photographers busy snapping pictures, hikers getting their exercise, and trail runners getting even more exercise pulling up the hills.

Was the reward worth the mud? Come take a look:

Looks like well worth a little mud!  I love the wildflowers especially.  We're starting to see things blooming although it's been even rainier than normal here (and normal is pretty rainy this time of year!)

Hi Tara -- it's gorgeous here, mud notwithstanding. As one hiker we met on the trail yesterday said, 'that's why God made hoses' [to wash off the mud!]

Nancy, you'd feel right at home with our recent rainy weather. Today, however, we're all reveling in sunshine!

Wildflowers are out in profusion--Indian Warriers, Hounds' Tongue, Buttercups, Lupines, California poppies, and a ton more.

Lottie, I love nature, and purple is one of my favorite colors.

I can't wait to give my camera a workout this year myself.

Hi Linda - you'll be giving your camera a workout soon, I'm sure. Have fun--and don't let a little mud stop you!

Hi Lottie, the rain does make the hill sides in CA beautiful. I use to live there and enjoyed when the natual flowers and shrups made the hill sides so lovely.

Great Pics!  Looks like a great place for a hike.  I always think of sunshine when I think about CA ... not rain and mud!?!?

I don't care how pretty everything gets in the rain, it was enough already.  Finally back into the 70s and 80s this week and SUNNY!

Hi Dawn -- do you ever come back here to visit? I must say the Stanford lands along Interstate 280 have been spectacular for the last few weeks. I welcomed the sun today, however.

Rick, we have great hiking on the Peninsula; I probably can drive to about 30 trailheads within 30 minutes of downtown San Carlos. Pulgas Ridge is less than 10 minutes from downtown.

Jane, I enjoy the rain, but I wholeheartedly agree with you -- enough already. Today was our first sunny day in ages--it felt good!

Lottie, Great photos. I was inspired to write about the beautiful sunny weather here today as well … so nice being outside after all the rain we have had. Looking forward to another great day tomorrow.

Excellent pictures Lottie. It was great having a pleasant day in the Bay Area. March has been a wet one to say the least.

Kathleen, the mud was fantastic, but the hike well worth it. Sun today was grand -- let's hope it remains for Sunday's open houses!

I'm with you there, Doug. I must say, as muddy as our trails are, they aren't anything compared to some of Mt. Diablo's muddy trails I've been on in the past! You have us beat, hands down!
