A new tenant moves in

I have seen this guy around the yard for a month now. He doesn't seem to be very afraid of me. He lives behind the compost heap in the corner of our yard, near the vegetable garden.

This morning I saw that he'd made himself a nest in some leaves and brush and was napping. Later in the afternoon, as I was pulling weeds, he came out and started looking for a late lunch. Cottontails are supposed to be active only at dawn and in the evening, but I guess he is pretty hungry. I brought him some dandelion leaves I had pulled up.

I think he's cute. And fortunately, we didn't plant lettuce this year.

Robin isn't it great when you have some new friends come for a visit. I wonder if there is a mate somewhere? You may have more bunnies coming in the near future. Maybe in time for Easter.

Hi Robin - Maybe this is good luck for you ... on the Chinese calendar it's the Year of the Rabbit!

Thanks, guys! I never made the connection to Easter or the Chinese calendar. I could use some good luck, but I don't think I need any more bunnies. He seems to be a bachelor, so hopefully he will be happy just hanging around and eating all the wall flowers and dandelions in the yard. I'm getting ready to disturb him this morning by mowing the grass before I go show a listing.

I just saw the first rabbit of the spring in our yard yesterday - hanging out suspiciously near our garden - though nothing is planted quite yet...

I love your new tenant. Out of curiosity, how much rent to rabbits pay there in Texas? They pretty much get a free ride out here. JJJJ.

Good morning Robin - would you still think he/she was cute if you HAD planted lettuce? I agree with Patricia, terrific post.

So darling!!!  He may be a widower... see below it seems they mate for life if they can :)

Both in the wild and in captivity, rabbits tend to find a "special friend" that they spend the majority of their time with and are faithful to throughout many breeding seasons. Rabbits who lose their partner often do not choose another and remain solitary.
