William JohnsonAnnounces a new Special Group- the iPad User Group

My New iPadI received my iPad 2 today and seems like I have been waiting so long. A few months ago knowing I would receive the new iPad 2 today on my Birthday, I set up and reserved the group name " iPad User Group". I have been using the iPads at the Apple store for a while now and already I have learned some of the ins and out so I started a group that is now active.

More and more of us in real estate and related industries are gravitating to the iPad so it seems fitting to start us all out right with a "User Group" where we share ideas, apps, and ways of using it to increase our business and the joy of doing it.

Mine is still in SYNC mode since opening up my gift a couple hours ago. So I will be back to share more and more but wanted to get the word out for those that already have an iPad as well as those of you that can benefit with lots of new  information about the iPad as we write our posts and tutorials.

The only ActiveRain member I am aware that is currently using the iPad is Pat Kennedy from Washington DC area.  She loves hers as I and many others of you will soon discover.

Hopefully you will find the need to join the new iPad User Group.

Hi John, Lots of different things out there and I saw one of those and it looked really cool and had nice functionality. I am guessing that many apps will work across different platforms. In comment #55, I was telling Lynn about the really cool cover that puts the iPad to sleep. Maybe a magnetic switch I am guessing because I don't know how they do this. But the best device for anyone out there is the one that they will use and there will be al sorts of differnt help groups out there but if you can gleen anythng from the iPad user group, we would want that. We all help each other and that doesn't change no matter what user group is used.

William, clearly your IPad is way cooler than my IPad!  I'm sort of wishing that I had waited for the new version to come out, but I do love having had it for long enough to figure it out - sort of!  Thanks for putting this group together.  I'm sure it will pass the AR Fun Test!

Hi John, Don't bother with the magnetic cover until you consider first the protective keyboard from Logitech and Zagg.com. Way more cool and safe too! Plus you have ab actual keyboard when typing on screen is not convenient. I even found the source for the stylus that works on a notes program for client files. We will be having lots and lots of information it is uncovered so stay tuned.

Hi Pat, One of the things I want to locate is the procedure for those that may want to sell their iPad 1 for version 2 and how one does that. There is always e-Bay but we will try and discover the sources for the best deal. I know I have an original iPhone that has been replaced for the new model and I need to get rid of it so that is why I am looking for the source to do that. And it will likely be the same source if you should ever decide to upgrade to the iPad version 2. This will be going on for the indefinite future with new models and members will want to know how to clear out the older models for the most $$. Next year will the iPad 3 and so on.

The group is here to help all of us not to have to recreate the wheel as it were.

Richard, I'll be getting a new tablet for my B-day and am on board to learn from all of you how you're using it for both work and play.  The timing of this group works perfectly for me.

Hi William-I'm so glad you started this group. I don't have an iPad yet, but stopped by an Apple store a couple of months ago and was very taken with it. I have always used pc's, so I'm wondering how this will fit in (not ready to change anything else at this point). I sort of see this as a device that fits a specific niche and doesn't take the place of anything I already have (laptop, desktop, smart phone), but does offer some wonderful functionality for working in the field. Wondering if there will be cross-platform frustrations?

I'm driving down to Phoenix for an iPad class given by Scottsdale Realtor Desiree Montgomery to learn more about it, and will be following your posts and the new group with interest.

Thank you!

Welcome to the iPad User Group Beth. Taking a class should be loads of fun. I find he iPad liberating actually. We all do so much on the computer these days from market research, CMA's, looking up property for Buyers, Listing homes and getting them marketed. Writing contracts for Seller's and Buyers and thus far, I mentioned only the key items. Also, what I mentioned are the functions you can do on an iPad if you choose to. Our mobile MLS works fabulous and the screen for the iPad makes the photos just brilliant. CMA's can be done in the cloud ( on line) data stored on the internet and no App or program is needed. ( CloudCMA.com). Zipforms is great on the iPad using Safari and a special address they will supply to you for their mobile addition. With digital signatures you can sign all the contracts. You can even have the clients sign the release of receipt of the MLS Data using Sign My Pad, right on the listing.  Having the iPad for notes for client information, classes or seminars, calendar, appointment, all the photos you ever want.

That brings us to blogging. Right now there are some work arounds that in a few months won't be needed anymore with the new iOS% operating system that Apple will release. You will be able to use Safari and write blogs and all the comments from wherever you are, the 10 hour battery life beats the notebooks and with the Logitech keyboard, you can have either online or external keyboards.

And this is just the beginning. The iPad carry like a thin book, so it can everywhere. Online news is great, ready is a new joy with the back lite screen, magazine are fun to turn the pages. Working on a smart phone is OK but working on the bigger screen is awesome. Notebooks are heavy and bulky  when compared to the tablet.

Hi, William,  Thanks for starting this group.  I love my iPad - bought my first one May 1 of 2010 and then the iPad2 on March 19th, 2011.  My son, Rob Johnson, bought his iPad and iPad2 within a week of when I bought mine. My old iPad went to my daughter, Tami.

For those wondering whether to get an iPad - find one you can use for a few minutes, or watch what a colleague does on their iPad. I didn't think I needed one until I saw a few people at CyberPros with iPads at their 2010 conference. Only a handful had them. At our 2011 CyberPro conference, only a handful didn't have one.

I rarely used a laptop in listing/selling presentations as I found the screen was often a barrier. It's so much nicer when you can hand your client the iPad and they can interact with it. They love it! The photos are so beautiful to look at on the iPad. It's also a good conversation starter when you're using it at your local coffee shop, outdoor cafe, hotel lobby, airport, etc. People want to talk about it whether they have one or are just curious.

One of my favorite apps to read each morning is Flipboard.

Hi Sharon, Flipboard is also my favorite. It has so much information and for anyone interested in technology, it is indespensible. The amount of information seems endless. For the iPad, the interaction itself between client and agent is worth the price. The consumers are so intrigued by it. When the iPod came out, people were used to spending just a couple bucks for ordinary. It revolutioned MP3 Players. They all stated to imitate because the consumer wanted the experience of the ipod. And each step in the develop brought more and more to realize tha you can't have an iPod experience on something less than an iPod.

I think it will be similar with the iPad. When the one iOS5 operating system comes out this Fall and Flash no longer becomes the dividing issue, many of the imitations of the iPad will be dumped and more people will understand the iPad experience can only be had on the iPad.

One you make the commitment to the iPad, there is no going back. You become hooked with it's amazing abilities. Learning all the tricks and ways to use it has been half of the fun. The iPad Tips and Tricks was so enjoyable to read and I still refer to it.
