A rant about personal responsibility, or sue-happy people, or ??

This week-end I'm on my own - it's just me and the dogs and cats, because my husband and my son took off to Montana on a fishing trip.

So... I don't have to cook for anyone! That means I indulge in a little junk food, because I'm too skinny to just ignore eating, and I'm sure as heck not going to cook when I don't have to.

egg roll packageBecause I'm the only one in the house who likes Chinese food, and I didn't want to drive 15 miles to a Chinese restaurant, I purchased a package of frozen egg rolls for my dinner tonight. And the package made me cranky!

The instructions: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees, Remove egg rolls from carton and inner wrapper. After explaining that they need to be on a baking sheet on the top rack and cook for 18-20 minutes, there's a "CAUTION: Tray and product will be hot."

Down at the bottom there's another caution: COOK BEFORE EATING.Why? if someone wants to eat a frozen or soggy egg roll, what's the harm?

Come on! If anyone is so stupid that they don't know something coming out of a 425 degree oven will be hot, do they deserve to eat??

I suppose those words are there for the same reason a hair-dryer package cautions "not to be used while in the shower." There are always people out there looking for a means to earn a living through lawsuits, so manufacturers write in every caution they can dream up.

Still... isn't there something wrong with a legal system that would let someone collect if they took a pan out of a hot oven with their bare hands - or bit into a 425 degree egg roll -  just because no one told them it would be hot?

This seems like the ultimate in a lack of personal responsibility.

Well anyway... I just heard the oven beep to tell me it's hot. So I'm going to go put that pan in the oven and hope to heck that I remember to use a hot pad when I take it out.You never know, I might forget...

I'm also hoping the dogs will take a nap, instead of taking their responsibility so seriously. When "Dad's not home" they work overtime at protecting me - and warning me if anyone comes near. Like a deer, a bird, a squirrel... It's a bit noisy here tonight.

Deer, birds, squirrels and Chinese food...sounds like paradise to me. You have hit one of my hot buttons - it seems in this litigious society, the new way to achieving the American Dream is to get it from someone else!

Susan - I do live in paradise. Plenty would disagree, since we have snowy winters, but I love living in the North Idaho woods.

It's one of my hot buttons too, but I guess it isn't so new. I've known several people over the years who seemed to live by collecting disability insurance after faked injuries. I'll never forget driving into a yard one day and finding the lady of the house out refilling her above-ground pool -  about a hundred feet from her house. She turned red when she realized she had left her crutches back there by the front door!

Ugh!  I hate these kinds of things.  I still can't get over that woman who won a lawsuit against McDonald's for spilling hot coffee on herself.  These ridiculous lawsuits drive me crazy!

Hi Marte,

As a friend used to say, you have good lawyers and you have bad ones, the good ones they "hang separately"......;0) the trouble with the system is that there is too much money at stake for them not to go nuts on suits, which makes everyone paranoyd

John & Kasey - Yes, that McDonalds coffee incident was on my mind when I read the egg roll package.

Peter & Linda - It seems like judges should just look at them and say "It's clear that you're trying to pull something. Case dismissed." A bit of common sense would go a long way in some of these lawsuits - like the McDonalds coffee case.

Marte:

It is a wonder that there are so many instructions and warnings on products now.  Are people really so naive that they would pull a cookie sheet out of a 425 degree over without oven mitts?  Is common sense a lost commodity

Evelyn - Apparently it is. We're just not expected to have enough sense to get through a day without specific instructions.

You'll be glad to know, I didn't forget - so I cooked and ate my dinner and didn't get burned at all!

Oh, I so know what you mean.  But, yes, there are people that really look for anything.  I have cusotmers who look for excuses to get discounts.  I now have to build in more & more disclaimers in our proposal (e.g. I can't control the weather and how long it takes for something to dry).

You know my thoughts on personal responsibility.  But if someone got sick or burned, they could always blame the manufacturer.  Apparently McDonald's scalded someone with hot coffee once.  (heavy sarcasm should be noted)

Debbie - And sometimes those people seem so nice going in - you don't expect that behavior from them.

Chris Ann - I can understand blaming the manufacturer if there happens to be poison in the food, but as for the rest... What annoys me is that in ridiculous cases like the hot coffee at McDonalds, lawyers take the cases and judges award damages.

Most of the people I know are proud of being able to use their own common sense and take care of themselves - the "I'm not responsible, you take care of me" mindset is one that I can't comprehend.

Hope you enjoyed your egg rolls and your alone time. As a serial care giver, I can only wonder what it would be like to just take care of myself.

Our society certainly is litigious, all I can do is shake my head in disbelief and not be that kind of person who lies to collect.

Thanks for the post.

Virginia - Yes, I did enjoy the egg rolls, as well as the alone time. But of course, I was glad to have the dogs and cats to keep me from being ALL alone! I always enjoy a rare week-end alone, but I'm always glad to see the men when they come home, too.

You really should find someone to take over your duties for a day or two and give yourself a vacation - You'll feel rejuvenated.

Oh Marte, that's been one of my pet peeves as well... now, we just have to make sure these people actually read these "warnings".

Silvia - Right. Next they'll be suing and winning on the grounds that no one forced them to read the warnings, so they didn't.

Marte,  These are quirky times to be sure.  You like in a lovely place...I am a native Montana (wondering where your husband and son went fishing!!!) and have lived a good share of my life in rural areas.  Ordering pizza meant I made it:  Dough and sauce made from scratch, I still have the recipes!  There is a lot to be said for a blizzard, a roaring fire and a good book!

Deborah - You want to send me that recipe! I love pizza - and any time I get to Sandpoint I stop by Papa Murphy's to bring home a take and bake.

My boys went to Ashley Lake, near Kalispell - they've  been going there every May or June for more than 20 years, and on occasion, I've gone along. I agree - a blizzard, a roaring fire and a good book are all good things - and perhaps accompanied by a bowl of bread dough rising by the fire.

Marte,  You are SO a soul sister!  I still have my Grandmother's....then my Mother's...now mine big yellow pyrex bowl for bread raising.  Made from stratch, kneaded by hand and finished off with making a cross in the dough as it is set aside to raise...asking the Lord to bless our bread.  I have taught my Grandchildren the same thing!!  BTW, I love Kalispell.  But, my favorite area in Montana is Swan Lake.  Stunning, absolutely stunning.

Deborah - or do you prefer to be called Dee Dee?  - You must have been reading about my bread bowl. Every time I use it, I think of a story my Grandmother told. She was about 6 or 7 years old at the time.

Her Mother had set the bread to rise and then gone out to bring the cow in for the evening milking. Apparently, the cow had decided to head for the tall timber, because her mother was gone a long time. Finally the bread started to run over the side of the bowl, but she'd been told not to touch it. She also wasn't allowed to light the lamp, so when it got dark she went to bed. When she woke up in the morning, her Mother still wasn't there, but she knew she'd been there, because the bread was punched down.

I don't think I've been to Swan Lake - I'll have to look it up!
