Why You Should Hand Your Business Cards to Everyone - And then do it again

The other day I needed to find someone here in my home town. She was the only person I knew that offered a particular service, and I couldn't find anyone else like her in the yellow pages.

The Internet was no help - people in this small town haven't noticed it yet!

So... how to find her? She's not in the phone book under her business name, and I couldn't remember her last name. business card

After calling a few friends, I got that much, but she wasn't in the book. Unfortunately, there were several men listed with that last name, but I had no idea which one might be her husband.

Because I really did need to find this woman, I started at the top of the list. Since nearly everyone is related around here, it didn't take too long to reach someone who knew her and knew which number to call. But you know that wouldn't have worked if I lived in a City!  And you know that if someone else had been easy to reach, I'd have called them and not wasted hours trying to find her.

Did she ever give me her card? Does she even have cards? Heck if I know.

What I do know:

If you want those people you meet and chat with in the course of a day to reach you when they want you, you need to keep handing out those cards. And then hand them out again, because people lose them and forget where they put them. If they have several, they just might find one when they want it.

One more thing:

The lady I needed was not involved with real estate. People in EVERY business that serves the local community need to keep handing out those cards. Especially if they run a home-based business.

HI MARTE!  I agree - people ask me over and over for another business card.  If we want to be found - we need to tell people how to do it and make it easy!

Marte,

Business cards are very important and a client is the best place to start. Leaving one on the table in a resturant or at any store can be beneficial as well.

Make it a great day !!

Erica - Good for you! There's nothing better than a personal recommendation!

Gabrielle - Considering the cost of business cards, handing them out over and over again is cost-effective marketing!

John - I agree. And stick one in the envelope when you pay your bill with a local merchant, too.

I've had several people come up and ask me for more cards.  Usually it's because they've given it to someone else, and didn't have one for themselves.  Handing out multiple cards isn't a practice of mine, but I think it needs to be.  Thanks for the great reminder!

You're welcome Lina - If there's one area in which I hold the title of "expert," it's in nagging.

Thank for reminding me Marte.  I feel like pushing my business card is just "over the top" sometimes.  but I should put more out there especially since I mostly list condos-(No sign)  when I list - and  because I tend to be a buyers agent.

Ruthmarie - I can understand how you feel. I'm on the shy side myself.

But, if you present your card with the right words, you might not feel that way. How about "Here's my card. If there's anything I can do for you, let me know. And if you'd like to get a copy when I update my market reports, just send me an email and I'll make sure you get them."

Of course, if you're involved in any kind of volunteer work, you can hand out your cards as a way for other volunteers to reach you over organizational issues, when they need a helping hand, etc.

Good article, Marte.  I used to do it all the time and should get back to the practice of handing out 10 business cards every time I leave the house.

Mimi - I believe it was Tom Hopkins who said you should hand out 10 cards every day - and not to go home until you had it done.

Marte - I usually don't carry my business card and ask for their e-mail address instead.  Works a lot better for me.

Great food for thought Marte!  I always forget to pull those business cards out as I'm talking to others, especially others that I have just met or gotten to know.  It's no problem handing them out to clients as you're working with them and asking them to remember you to everyone you know but it seems to be a different story when you just talk socially.  Thanks so much for the helpful hint.  I will begin to do that tomorrow.

Good for you Karen! You just never know when handing your card to someone will result in getting a good new client.

I gave cards but they still listed with someone else. I guess I need to do "over and over again".

Jane - Yes, just keep on keeping on. Are you asking for their cards at the same time? Or offering to send your market report? Getting permission to stay in touch might help.
