Sundays are special!

Sundays are special! Pittsburgh PAWhen I was a youth, Sundays had a lot more significance than they do today.

Most businesses closed their doors, and the afternoons following church were usually spent visiting relatives in various areas of town.

I looked forward to the “road trips!” We didn’t have the Internet or video games back then, and since we only had one family automobile riding in the car was actually a treat. It was a wonderful break from the ordinary and a chance to see the world around me.

There was something about these family treks that I reminisce about with  tremendous fondness.

It made Sundays very special.

And it’s a feeling that stays with me to this very day.

Hi Richard.  I was just talking with a friend about this the other day.   In our home, the entire extended family would come for dinner, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Friends, just hanging out relaxing and getting to know one another.    That Sunday tradition is sorely missed!

Richard - you have brought back fond memories on long ago Sundays.  Those days were special and will stay in my memory forever.  It was family and friends actually being together and talking and sharing.  Nice post!

Carol...

I wonder if there is any chance that we can get the tradition going again? It would be wonderful, wouldn't it?

Thanks and have a great Sunday.

Your memories of Sunday reminded of mine too. Like yours, it was the only day my family didnt open their store. So, my dad who is the window shopper haul us to malls, check out competition, etc. Our malls are huge. Often 5-8 levels and it takes all day to walk. We leave the house at 9am for a big brunch, then walk all day before we get to eat again at 9pm at night.

I remembered Sundays being special but sometimes it wasnt such a nice special when you are hauled all over town, nothing to buy and walking aimlessly.

Good morning Richard,

We did the same thing. We would drive to my grandparents house in VT and always stopped for ice cream for a treat:). Often we stopped a mill to look at fabric as my mom sewed all the time and got me started. It was a family thing and your right..no video games..we made up games about things we saw..and actually talked and laughed with each other :).

Kids used their imaginations, were outside. My family on Sunday afternoon took turns visiting different aunts/uncles homes. Parent talks on the open porch, kids played, explored, spend time together like a family. Not alone.

Richard - Those were indeed the good ole days.  I miss those Sunday afternoons after Church just being a kid or like you taking those family Sunday afternoon rides.  If were lucky we could stop and get a Coke along the journey :)  Showing my old age now.

Hi Richard,

The saying "Sunday Driver" really hits home with me growing up.  We would all pile in the back of the station wagon and go on a Sunday drive as a family.  I haven't thought about that for a long time.

With temptation of business opportunity, I have found myself opting to work on Sunday, a decision that is easy to make in the moment as a way to make up for the less than stellar year of sales activity.  I have recently recommitted to making Sunday that special day of church, family, rest and fun moments.  I have noticed that when Monday begins, I feel more at peace and more focus.  We don't get a chance to have those great memories if we don't pause to make them!  Enjoy your Sunday and make that great new memory.

Richard...I am seeing a small trend of small businesses, especially restraunts, being closed one day a wekk. usually a monday.  I say good for them!

So many of the same memories! Sunday was usually my Dad's only day off, all though worked some @ dinner time or evening (being a musician). Many Sunday's were dinner at Grandma & Grandpa's house and we usually went for a Sunday drive in his 49 Chevy (2 door) Businessman's Coupe. Grandpa would drive, Uncle George would sit up front with Grandpa, and Grandma would sit in the back with my brother and I.

Same thing... off we'd go making the rounds to visit relatives. I also remember "the Blue laws" here in Washington. No meat, no wine on Sunday's and most all the stores in town were closed. Fond memories.

Yes, me too. I have a special feeling about Sundays... But right now, doing real estate, it is not that easy to be free... (Open Houses, buyers, etc)

Have a wonderful week.

Sundays were indeed special. I think somewhere along the line they have lost that specialness and we need to get it back.
