You Can't Ignore Social Media Forever - SEO is Going Social

social media SEO

With Google turning out their new Search Plus Your World algorythm online searches are getting more personal and more detailed than ever before. People are searching using detailed questions, needing answers and information. People are on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+ and every other social media out there and unfortunately if you want to be found online you can no longer turn a blind eye to the social side.

Google is picking up what others are doing socially and turning this into the top search results. No longer is your static page on your website you created five years ago going to get the same results as those that posted today and had feedback, comments, shared posts and tweets. This is where the information is at and if we don't keep up with it we quickly lose our online traction.

Google is returning images, videos, answers and active news posts that inform and quickly give us the results we need.  Google is also now indexing Facebook comments and this means that any visitor to that site can affect search rankings by commenting. "Quality, relevant comments and links may help boost a page’s ranking, but spam in Facebook Comments may also hurt rankings." - Inside Facebook

Here’s what this means to a website. Say you’ve just published a new market report for the Las Cruces real estate area, and of course you want people to find it when they do a related Google search:

  • In the old search model, you pack the headline with keywords like “Las Cruces Real Estate Market Report″ so everyone searching Google for that phrase sees your story. A simple, one-size-fits-all solution.
  • In the new model, Let's say Bob searched for this story but only because his friend shared it and promoted it, But Tom could instead see a different part of the story that his other friend shared and thus get different results. Example model by Poynter

I understand that you can't be everywhere at once and keeping up with one social media is time consuming enough. But I also don't want you to get stuck in just blogging. Once the blog is out there and it rolls off the front page you must have a way to bring people back, to draw questions and comments from them and to discuss and talk about it in social media circles otherwise Google will not find any importance in it and you're once again lost in cyber space.

"Those that ignore social media will become isolated, invisible and irrelevant to growing segments of digital audience." - Poynter

So what do you do?

sharing links and social media

Pick a couple social media and make sure you are promoting your information, blogs, listings, rates, ideas and personal opinions out there at least 3-4 times a week - more is better but not over 10 times a day otherwise people will start to unlike you or stop following.

Tell people what to do. Like my page - follow me - ask questions that you want answers to - and answer those that you can when you find them. Keep your business on the forefront but don't shove it in people face every time they see you.

Share other people's posts and let them know. They just may return the favor.

You may have to go kicking and screaming but it will make a difference if you keep at it.

Media streams, of the topics you covered and swimming with others in the same jet stream. Important to harness and know what you say, how and when, where all help trigger search engine results. Use your media, create fresh content someone would want to use.

So you are telling me that I am not doing enough with AR, facebook, linkedin and twitter.  I now need to post on Google+.  Help!  I haven't even looked at Google +.  So if I have to be on it, tell me what to do.

Thanks everyone for the comments, They kind of got away from me this week since it was my birthday and I was banned from the computer! HA... Jirius,  It basically means we are no longer just randoming finding things on the search engines... we are getting it cause our friend posted it, then we see our other friend liked something and we  navigate to the content or site via our friends rather than the search engines. This is where it's ok to still do great stuff online but your connections on social media are ever that much more powerful.

Evelyn, since it IS from Google and if you WANT to be seen on Google, my suggestion is to use their platform.... they love their own tools so why not. YOuTube uses Google. YEs it's hard to be everywhere at once but when you post really good, optimized content, get it EVERYWHERE you can. I know.. that's going to take an extra 10 min maybe... but it may be really worth it.

Winston, Where did you see this featured? I keep getting comments but not featured... odd. ?

Phil - I KNOW! UGH...  ;-)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Tammie - this is excellent!  SEO is so important and so hard to think of every day in all the things we do.  We need constant reminders to have SEO foremost in our minds.  I have to get started on my day, but I am bookmarking this one to come back to later in the day for more thought.  Thank you!

Tammy, It sure pays to be aware of all the things that you've mentioned.  I love the SEO posts because like Barbara above, I forget to think about the importance of it and seeing blogs written about it reminds me to make some effort to help my SEO daily.

So glad to see it in IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FEATURED GROUP.

Personally, I focus on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and ActiveRain as they give me the most return on my time invested with them. I am still trying to grasp Google +1 and how I can correlate it with my business!! Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi Tammy.......I've been on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn for Years, in fact my AR posts go to Twitter, then sent to Facebook and then LinkedIn..now i like my +1 when I post and do the same for others.

I just did a search yesterday while in my Google + and I did not show up with normally good key words like Victoria BC Real Estate, Oak Bay Real Estate and others...I then looked at my Google + posts...for some reason I thought when I liked the   +1 button on posts they would show up in my Google Posts...back to basic with Google +, I'll need to post there directly...Correct?

Congratulations on your Feature....Thanks for sharing!

Tammy - My mistake. I could have sworn I saw a gold star next to someone who reblogged this post. It certainly should have been a featured post and I'm going to suggest it.
