Google Closing Picnik! Ughhhhh

What a way to start my day. I awoke this morning, headed over to Picnik (my favorite photo editing ever) to learn that they are closing down on April 19th. I get a refund. Big whoop. I don't want the refund and I DON'T WANT Picnik going away. Period, end of sentence.

After throwing a tantrum, I went back to my computer and did a search to learn more. Here's an article written by Harry McCraken titled Life is Not a Picnik: Google Close It's Cool Photo Editing Tool which goes into the details of this decision.

If you've used Picnik, whether it's to crop photos, watermark photos, sharpen, and the list goes on, you too have come to realize just how easy a tool it is to use. In fact, I've written many tutorials promoting Picnik as it was just that good.

Also in my search, I found a petition, which I quickly signed. Here's the link: Don't Close Picnik!  As of this writing, they have 307 signatures and are aiming for 400. I'm hoping the list grows to 400,000.

My final comment - Google, Please do not close down Picnik. And if this falls on deaf ears, then please create a platform that duplicates the awesomeness that Picnik provides and make it available BEFORE April 19th!

Picnik is going away, and many people are NOT happy.

Fortunately, there are other Photo Editing Tools out there!

Hi Kathy--well, not the information I wanted to read on a Saturday night.  I will sign the Petition and am hoping that since there are still a few months before April 19 something magical will happen in the Google world.

Kathy:

I go the email too.  I was shocked.  Picnik is my favorite site.  I used it every day.  I guess I will have to try picasa and Google + as Craig suggests.  I am going to sign the petition.  Thanks for providing a link to it.

I might be the odd man out, but I've never heard of Picnik.  If you rely on anything so much that you're shocked when you don't have it anymore.... YOU'RE TOO RELIANT ON IT.

Cameron - You're right. "I'm too reliant on it." See, I have this tendency, when I find something that works well and is easy to use, to "rely" on it (smile).

Yes, leave it to our hero, Craig. I'm quite sure that there'll be some great tutorials coming soon. In fact, once I get the Creative Kit thing figured out, I may do a few myself.

In the interim, we'll have to wait and see what other Picnik-like features will be added (or not added) to Creative Kit. In the meantime, I've got some great collages to make using Picnik where they've made that feature extremely easy to do.

You might have a look at iPiccy, http://ipiccy.com/ which seems to have some of the interface simplicity of Picnik. Also a digital trands article lists several alternatives here. I thought iPiccy had a lot of fairly sophisticated tools, some of which rival Photoshop's capabilities for post processing.

Dave - I just checked out ipiccy and it looks like it has a lot of similarities to Picnik!  Thanks for sharing this link.

I have only recently started using Picnick, love it and soon going away.  But like Craig, #10,  I believe the tools will be going over to Picasa.

Poor Kathy - you were the FIRST person I thought of when I read the news.  I was upset too, but read that all of the employees, and the functionality, were going to be incorporated into Google+:  http://agbeat.com/tech-news/picnik-photo-editing-tool-to-shut-down-but-the-party-is-not-over/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AGNewsMag+%28Real+Estate+News+-+AGBeat%29&utm_content=Yahoo%21+Mail

So I guess this is one more inducement to join G+...

Thanks again to those who are signing the petition.

Thanks, too, for those that are providing links to alternative solutions. The one that stands out, at least at this point, is ipiccy.

Kathy - I sent out an email to everyone I know who loves picnik to sign the petition and asked them to forward it. Hope they change their mind. I'd be more than happy to pay more for this photo program and I'm sure I'm not alone! Thanks for spreading the word - after all, you are the one who turned most of Active Rain onto Picnik and we are grateful!

Kathy - I signed the petition the day of the announcement. Very disappointing. I've heard the photoshop.com has a free section right now that is pretty comparable. I haven't checked it out yet though. Still hoping they change their mind - even though I know it's not going to happen!
