This subject has come up lately and even more so during this recession. I have spoken with both sides of the fence. The guy doing the work who comes up with an hourly charge is charging what he believes he is worth. The guy hiring doesn't want to be nickel-ed and dime-ed to the minute and therefore just wants a price to complete the whole work
POINT OF VIEW
Hourly works very well for the guy who is doing his profession. I am dealing with tradesmen in the business who charge $25-$50 dollars an hour to perform their services. They charge the same amount whether they are talking to you, consulting or working. That is their fee and they stand on it.
FINE UNTIL......
The problem comes in where if they talk more than they work and the one who does the hiring doesn't fair well. Now, we have a stress of a sorts brewing. Questions cost the money. Delays and misunderstandings cost too.
PAYING BY THE JOB
That is why having work done per the job or cost to complete makes sense. Any additional time is absorbed in the costs. It also puts the work on the one performing it. If that person finishes before or earlier, well good for them.
THE HOURLY GUY
The guy charging per hour during these hard and questionable times might want to be more flexible in my opinion. Keeping busy and having a steady flow plus good word of mouth has value. The other side is that some of these men are so busy that they don't have to make allowances.
WE ALL WORK TOGETHER OR WE DONT WORK
Lately, I have been trying to spend money hiring others for some part time work wherever it is needed. I have run into two occasions where these same people where over-charging in my opinion. I am not responsible for solving every-ones financial problems. People should be happy to be kept busy making a buck here or there. At the end of the week, it adds up
PERSPECTIVE IN THE TRENCHES
I am talking to guys on the job this morning. One is $50 per hour and the other bid the job. The two get into a casual conversation with the job guy just talking as he is working. However, the hourly guy is not working while he is talking. Consequently, the guy paying the bills wants work not talk. When the hourly has a question, he gets answered and sent back to work. When the job guy has a question, you can dialog without the stress..
WORK IT OUT
The ones that are flexible stay busy and set up work during these hard times. The ones that hold out for top dollar may or may not prevail. But why risk it? Some money coming in is better than no money coming in...
If hourly, work your buns off. Full hours pay for a full hours work..no talk.
