SAINT VALENTINE REALLY GOT AROUND!

By
Real Estate Agent with Sotheby's International Realty Canada - Brokerage

Saint Valentine really got around . . .  this is one busy busy Saint!

Or, was there two different Saints?

Did you know the Patron Saint of Epilepsy is also Saint Valentine? (along with another 40 Saints!)

It seems the bigger, greater the disease, the more saints that were assigned to the task!!

There are two saints with the name Valentine who are worshipped in the Roman Catholic Church:   (please see comments 26 & 28 below)

Valentine of Terni, patron saint day February 14, and

Valentine of Rhaetia, patron saint day January 7.

Historically, people with epilepsy are portrayed in images of both these St. Valentines.  (most scholars believe they are the same person)

"Saint Valentine is also the Patron Saint of:

affianced couples,
bee keepers,
engaged couples,
epilepsy,
fainting,
greetings,
happy marriages,
love,
lovers,
plague,
travellers,

young people.

He is represented in pictures with birds and roses".

~ from the Saints & Angels website.

"In 1836, some relics that were exhumed from the catacombs of Saint Hippolytus then near (rather than inside) Rome, were identified with St Valentine; placed in a casket, and transported to the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland, to which they were donated by Pope Gregory XVI.

Many tourists visit the saintly remains on St. Valentine's Day, when the casket is carried in solemn procession to the high altar for a special Mass dedicated to young people and all those in love."

So now you know just a wee bit more about Saint Valentine's Day and its patron Saint and you can share this as part of your day for lovers!

Happy Valentine's Day from Susan Emo, your Kingston,Gananoque and 1000 Islands Realtor...

There are more than enough saints to go around for every conceivable occasion, but I don't believe saints are supposed to be "worshipped" but are honored or something similar.

Carolyn -  I am not a Catholic, Roman or otherwise, so I appreciate you pointing out the somewhat incorrect usage of the word "worshipped" .  When I looked it up, this is what I found:

"The word "worship" has undergone a change in meaning in English. It comes from the Old English weorthscipe, which means the condition of being worthy of honour, respect, or dignity. To worship in the older, larger sense is to ascribe honour, worth, or excellence to someone, whether a sage, a magistrate, or God. In Scripture, the term "worship" was similarly broad in meaning, but in the early Christian centuries, theologians began to differentiate between different types of honour in order to make more clear which is due to God and which is not. As the terminology of Christian theology developed, the Greek term latria came to be used to refer to the honour that is due to God alone, and the term dulia came to refer to the honour that is due to human beings, especially those who lived and died in God’s friendship—in other words, the saints. Scripture indicates that honour is due to these individuals (Matt. 10:41b).  These terms—latria, dulia, used to be lumped under the one English word "worship." Sometimes when one reads old books discussing the subject of how particular persons are to be honoured, they will qualify the word "worship" by referring to "the worship of latria" or "the worship of dulia." To contemporaries and to those not familiar with the history of these terms, however, this is too confusing. "

I will update the main part of this post to draw the attention to our discussion.  Thanks again for pointing this out.
