It wasn't working......so I did something about it! Why I joined Keller Williams RC.

In response to the Challenge "Eliminating Inefficiencies in Real Estate", I'd like to share something that changed my life.

Keller Williams ColumbiaAsk my son what he wants to be when he grows up and today he will say an astronaut. Tomorrow it might be a boxer and then Friday a fireman. That's OK, he's 5  If you had asked me the same question at any age, I never had an answer. There was never anything I really wanted to do until I "Fell" into Real Estate in 2002. Prior to that I worked to feed my addiction to travel. 7 months of work followed by 5 months of travel across this amazing planet with a backpack of all my possessions on my back. (That's a whole story in itself!)

So I affiliated with Long & Foster Companies in Ellicott City in 2002 & I didn't have my first settlement until April 23rd 2003. Then the world went nuts and I sold 30 more homes in that calendar year. My head was spinning and for the first time in my life I had finally found my passion!

The next 7 years were a roller coaster ride where I created a team of 11 agents with 40 million in production down to just myself and my administrative partner with only 10 million in production. I added a baby into the mix in the middle of that too. I was flying by the seat of my pants.

And then it was just not working but I had a fear of change. I am loyal to a fault and would never imagine that I would leave my safe environment that I knew so well and that had made me happy once upon a time,

The straw that broke the camels back was when I attended a Long and Foster technology training seminar. Thanks to Active Rain I could have taught that class. I learned NOTHING and the tools that Long & Foster offered were so yesteryear. It was remedial at best. The ironic thing was that I could see that most of the audience had a "Deer in highlights" look about them as the training was so far over their head.

Time to suck it up and make a change even if it was going to be painful.

Keller williams realty centreI made the transition to Keller Williams Realty Centre of Greater Howard County in Columbia in September in 2011. IT WAS PROBABLY THE BEST BUSINESS DECISION I HAVE MADE IN 10 YEARS.

Keller Williams International is the fastest growing Real Estate company in the USA. The level of technology and training is off the charts. They CARE about their agents too.

My simple analogy is that I have gone from being in a retirement home (Long & Foster) with pureed bland food to being back in (Real Estate) Kindergarten at KWRC. The personal and professional growth is taking my breath away. I learn so much every day. The celebration of success is making my head swell and the abundance of awesome food at the weekly meeting is expanding my waistline........the one thing I do not need. I am surrounded by true professionals who constantly share their personal business tools and I feel like a Rookie again. The education is constant and intense. My Team Leader is engaged in our business, giving of her time, enthusiastic, professional, caring and a kick a%$ coach to success. I AM ON TRACK TO HAVE MY BEST YEAR EVER!

My departure after 9.5 years with Long & Foster, the majority of which I was a top selling agent in the region, did not merit one phone call or e-mail to ask me why I had left. Maybe they just don't care.

Do I regret leaving Long & Foster? I regret not leaving sooner!!!

ouch!! Burning bridges are we? I dare to differ with you on your feelings about your former affiliation though but you already know this from a previous conversation.  But I am glad you found a place that lights your fire once again.

Ellie, Congratulations on your move! When I moved to Keller Williams nearly 2 years ago, I didn't know what I was getting into.  The broker/owner of my last company and a dear friend had tried convincing me for 8 months that we as a company needed to move to KW.   We were a small boutique company of about 35.  Most of us went to Keller Williams and I have to say, it was the best move I could have made.   The education and support is more than I ever could have imagined.  My first year there, my business doubled.  I didn't know all that I didn't know.   Be sure to take advantage of all the tools & training that is offered.  Wishing you the best!

Ellie, As someone who is still a newbie to AR, I can relate to this post. Change is hard but we must embrace it and move forward. Even joining AR was a little scary yet thrilling at the same time. Learning so much on here and you have definitely set the bar high in your blogging ability. Great job!

Great story about change. I recently was interviewing brokers as well, but decided on Tuesday to stay where I am as it's the best for me.  Everyone has different goals and different brokerages meet those goals.

Ellie,

I agree that KW has better technology. KW's agent websites offer far more than LNF's do. I don't even use mine because it doesn't do much with SEO. I have looked into KW myself but there office that I would have went to closed. Good Luck! I hope the change is what you need to breath life back into your business.
