Yesterday, while my mom was still in town, we decided to go do a bit of shopping with the whole family.  We were headed to Lakeline Mall, and we originally considered going to that area to eat.  On the way there, I decided that would be ill-advised, considering it was the day after Christmas and it was exactly "lunchtime" (i.e. around noon).  Instead, we opted to go to Zorba, which is a Greek restaurant located near Dell in Round Rock, just in front of the Wal-Mart.

Although the food was superb, the communication skills of the employees who were placed in charge of taking our order were VERY poor.  It was laborious trying to explain what we wanted to eat, and it took several tries to finally get everything squared away at the counter.  Additionally, the menu was not helpful, as I picked something rather quickly, only to find out that we MUST order from the lunch menu, which the menu did not specify.  All things considered, it worked out well, as they actually gave me more food for about two dollars less.

Our kids enjoyed their cuisine as well, which is really the primary determining factor for our family as to whether or not we will return.  My son had a plain chicken gyro (pita wrap) and he liked it a lot, proclaiming it "spicy and tasty".  Our daughters (one age six and one toddler) both enjoyed the meatballs with rice, although the Zorba crew was unable to provide the meatballs without the somewhat spicy sauce (we rubbed it off with a napkin).

My wife and I both had the chicken plate with tzatziki sauce, with sides of hummus, rice pilaf, and tabouli.  My mom had a salad with chicken that looked and tasted great.  The meals come with one piece of pita bread, and they only charge 50 cents for each additional piece.  We were frankly too stuffed to have dessert, and we brought home some of the leftovers.

Overall, I would recommend Zorba, as long as you have some patience when it comes to getting your order correct.  Since you order at the counter and the food is pretty much ready to go, the service is fast.  Drinks are self-service.  The total for our meal (three adults, three kids) was only $41 and change, so it is pretty affordable.

Jason, next time I'm in the area I'll make sure and check the place out.  I was brave enough to make the trek to Cabala's down in Buda yesterday.  I couldn't believe the traffic, amazing!  I took the back way home, down through Blanco and then back up to Marble Falls, avoiding Austin all together.  It cut about 30 minutes off the trip.  There are some fantastic out of the way places in the Blanco area too.  Maybe someday I'll copy this and do a review of the local feed places.  Great idea!

Thanks for the review.  We're looking for 12 restaurants for the Central Texas Food-Centrics to visit in 2008, and we haven't done Greek yet (Thai, Louisiana, Moroccan, Romanian, Ethiopian . . . nope, no Greek yet).  I'll pass this along to my son who's coming up with the list.  (We're planning on doing one restaurant visit and one "other" - potluck, group cooking lesson, etc. - each month in 2008.)

JC:

To feed a family for $41.00 is GREAT!!!!!  We can't go to DQ for $41.00 in this house.  'Course our eyes are always bigger than our stomach and we bring the leftovers to our little puppy Brutus.  Sweet baby.

Be glad that they had a hard time understanding you...that means the food will be more authentic.  Trust me...that is a good thing.  You haven't lived until you go to dine on Indian Cuisine and the cook is named Pedro.  =]

Jason- WOW, I love giving the kids good cultural experiences. That is such a great learning lesson, for home school! I make a great tabouli! I love Greek food, just don't eat cheese anymore. Katerina

Yum - sounds good AND cheap!  $41 in any DC restaurant won't buy you much - let alone feed 5 people!

Any time you need a translator, just give me a call!  I speak and read it fluently.  In Greece, the typical way to serve a gyro is to also stuff the pita with french fries along with all the other fixings -- mmmm.

That picture has my mouth watering. I'm sitting here eating Cheese Nips and I'd much rather have some real food! But I hate cooking... I guess I'll continue with my Cheese Nips :P

JASON - I'm not much of a fan of Greek food, but I do like breaking plates.  If I come to Austin, we should go and break some plates.

Adam, you can just come to Scottsdale instead.  I'm not Greek, but my family has started a tradition of plate-breaking.  It's primarily spearheaded by my two year old, but still ...

DAN - I am happy to oblige - glad you liked it.

JEM - Feel free to use this idea.  I am happy that you enjoyed this one.

TRICIA - That sounds like a great time.  I hope you still consider using Cafe Mangu in Pflugerville as well.  I think you had mentioned that on the previous review post I did about that one.

JESSICA - I thought it was a good value as well, and the food was really flavorful.  I would imagine that we will return sometime soon.  Hopefully, we will be able to communicate better with the staff.

LINDA - The food was superb.  Feel free to call me when you come to Austin again, and we can meet for lunch.

KATERINA - I am a recent tabouli fan.  You make a good point about the homeschooling experience.  Have a great new year!

JIM - Yes, it was certainly reasonably priced.  Thanks for reading my review and for commenting!

JEANNIE - Thanks for your offer.  Next time we go, I may call you and enlist your services as a translator.  That is very cool!

LISA - Yes, Cheese Nips would have a tough time competing with the food in the photo, but I still like them, too!

GEORGINA - It's some good stuff, isn't it?

ADAM - I really like Greek food if it is a good restaurant.  However, breaking plates sounds like even more fun.

PAUL - Thanks for coordinating a plate-breaking event for Adam.

Jason, sorry for the delay. Thanks for sharing with us in "I recommend" I can't believe I missed this one. I have Greek family! Good authentic Greek food can be hard to find at time, but it really is good when you do find it. I will never forget riding down the road in Greece and stopping at slouvaki on a stick much like you see hotdog stands here.
