Fishing the Chesapeake Bay

One of the greatest pleasures of living around Annapolis is also one of it's greatest treasures. The Chesapeake Bay. Maryland's portion of the bay covers 1,726 square miles  with the narrowest part of the bay being right here in Annapolis at 4 miles. All in all the Chesapeake Bay is 195 miles long and is the biggest estuary in the United States.

A day, or even a couple hours, on the bay rock fishing is a day like no other.  From the hunt for the perfect fishing spot, to the thrill of the fight of the catch, rock fishing is part of the lifestyle when you live around Annapolis.

Did you know that the Rockfish (Striped Bass) is Maryland's designated state fish? In 1965 the General Assembly prefaced the designation by saying:

"Whereas, The people of Maryland as long time and appreciative residents of the productive Chesapeake Bay area know of it first hand the recreational and gastronomic delights of this wonderful land, and

Whereas, Not the least among the good reasons for living in Maryland is the abundant and unexcelled delicacy of the Chesapeake Bay striped bass or rockfish, and

Whereas, In the judgment of the members of the General Assembly of Maryland, it is a simple act of justice and of equity that this fine old Maryland fish should be honored by being designated as the official fish of the State of Maryland . . . "

Young or old, a day on the bay rock fishing is a perfect day when you live the Annapolis lifestyle

BTW- If you do not have a boat or know someone who does then there are plenty of charter boats in the region to get you out there. Just grab a couple friends and let the Captain lead you to a great day on the bay. Maryland Chesapeake Bay Fishing Charters

Hi Barbara- Hubby had a great time. Took about 15 minutes to reel this one in. 36" long it was. A great catch for the day.

Hi Sean- Funny how we tend to do that. We are so busy working and stuff that we forget to enjoy what we have around us. Grab your camera as I am sure you will find some treasures to share.

I wouldlove to take a boat road on the Chesapeake Bay, no fishing necessary...just loads of sunscreen.  I can smell the salty breeze already.
