Fair Oaks CA "birds" gather to sing at sundown

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold, Fair Oaks

I think just about every neighborhood has a big tree where hundreds of birds gather at the end of the day to chirp and chatter.  We used to have one of those a couple of doors down from us when I lived in Orange County in Southern California, and I loved the beautiful mass of singing birds.

Well in the heart of Fair Oaks Village in Sacramento County we have plenty of songbirds, but we also have feral chickens of all colors, sizes and shapes, and there is a huge tree just a couple of doors down from our office where the chickens gather at sundown.

Here is what they sound like - not quite as beautiful, but still fun to hear.  They usually settle down to sleep after a little bit.

When I lived in Walnut Creek, there was an area where several lost parrots would gather and sing, squawk and talk in the early evenings.  It was really funny to hear their conversations coming out of the trees.

Hi Doug - That must have been fun.  This tree was loaded with chickens when I filmed this, but a lot of them had already settled in to sleep and the tree is so thick that it's hard to see them all on camera.

Susan - We get the coyotes howling at night, but nothing like this.  Loved the video!

Laura - Luckily we have no coyotes in that neighborhood or we'd soon have no chickens!

Hi Susan,

This is fascinating as I did not know that chickens got into trees at night to roost. This video is really neat and thanks so much for sharing. I am just glad this tree is not in my backyard. I have lots of birds sleeping there but no chickens.

Hope your weekend was wonderful.

Kristin - Luckily, the chickens seem to hang out mostly in the Village, and this tree is surrounded by businesses that are mostly closed at night.

Hi Susan, How cool is that! I hadn't realized that Feral Chickens were that common here but I guess when they return to the wild, it can happen anywhere they get out and don't have predators waiting at the gate, :-)

Susan, I loved watching (and listening to) this video! I could see that many chickens must have been sleeping, but there was one chicken in particular (the black & white one) who may have had insomnia. :)

Hi Susan -- Chickens, huh -- who would have thought it.   We have parrots in some neighborhoods who make an appearance every afternoon -- it can be a bit disarming to those who have never seen err I mean heard them before.
