Antiques Road Leads to Grand Rapids in Summer '08

This article ran in the Grand Rapids Press yesterday, Jan. 7 th, 2008 :                                                                        summer 08 tour map of antiques road show

GRAND RAPIDS -- The Antiques Roadshow -- the television program where people might learn that ugly vase handed down from Aunt Gladys actually is worth thousands of dollars -- has selected Grand Rapids as one of the six cities it will visit this summer.

Appraisals are scheduled to be filmed in the city on Aug. 9. The location is to be determined, but a spokesperson said DeVos Place or Van Andel Area are likely destination given the amount of space required by the show.

While it's OK to start thinking about what to bring, show spokeswoman Judy Matthews said it's too early to start covering heirlooms in bubblewrap for safe transport.

The show plans to distribute only 3,400 pairs of tickets to people selected through a lottery. Applications are to be available starting Jan. 21 at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/tickets.html  and the deadline is April 20, 2008.

If you are thinking of taking a family heirloom for an appraisal, go online January 21 to above website and apply for a ticket.

You never know, your ugly heirloom might be worth a year's college education or it might be worth nothing! At

the very least, you get a free appraisal and you might be featured on the Antiques Road Show program.

I have a golf club that looks like a HOCKEY STICK.  It can from Scotland on a boat with a man who later sold my family one of our first homes.  The golf club was obviously used by a left handed person - and the only pictures of one I can find date back to 1700.  Wonder what they would think of that???

Hi Bonnie:  I think these tickets are going to be like gold; since they're being passed out in a lottery drawing.  I love the Roadshow; don't have much in the way of antiques, though.

Bonnie, I love that show!  My mother has so many treasured items she would probably need a private appraisal but I'll be the public thanks you for putting that information out there!

Karen: I enjoy watching the show, do you think we can get tickets??

Eleanor: Golf collectibles are a hot item ~ bet they would love it!! Don't know if that is a mashie or a niblick you are describing.

Terry: You got it - I've gotta try the lottery- what the heck!

Ed: Thanks for commenting, yes, the tickets are limited to 3400 and you have to have an item for appraisal to get in.

Carole: I really love to watch it too. It always amazes me what is worth a lot and what isn't! I like the furniture tips. If I get in, I'll blog about it!

Eleanor: FYI

The mashie is a wooden club pre-20th century similar in loft to a modern 5 iron.

The mashie niblick is a wooden club pre-20th century that is similar in loft to a modern 7 iron.

these definitions are from www.aboutgolf.com

Glad I could keep you laughing - it is good for the soul.

Hope you get the tickets.  We did this a few years back when Comstock Park High School invited appraisers in and set it up like the road show.  It was great fun seeing what all the other people brought in and getting to know the people around you and the history behind their "treasures".

Bonnie - looked it up - best I could - this club has NO IRON and is literally shaped kind of like a hocky stick with a much sorter head.  Thanks for prompting me to look for it.  When I find a picture I'll let you know what it is!

Jan: I'm sure that will be the way it is IF we get tickets. At least I can watch it on PBS sometime next year.

Eleanor: Your club is older that the metal heads, probably pre-20th century. I have an old golf cartoon picture that shows your type of club.  I'm sure it is valuable - old wooden golf clubs didn't survive as well as the metal ones.  Golf actually started in Holland as a type of ice hockey in the 16th?? century and then the Scots took it home and it evolved into what we have today.

This is one of my favorite shows!  How cool that it's going to be "live" in your area.

Thank you for responding to my blog on Livingston stats.  I was quite disappointed to see a drop in numbers, especially in the dollars.  To think that the biggest dollars came from sales between $200 - $250K.  I hope your area is doing better.  Lu

Okay- so I looked and looked for "my club."  It's a long neck - from the feather ball era.  As it has no metal on it - figure it has to be pre 1850.

Here's what I found...

The most valuable golf clubs are from the 1600s and 1700s. A group of eight woods and irons (called the "Troon Clubs") are on loan to the British Golf Museum. But you'd be unlikely to find a vintage golf club at a flea market -- collectors acquire clubs at auctions or through dealers. Club categories...

Long-nose. Made prior to 1890, these clubs had long, wooden heads. Most golfers in this era used only six or seven clubs, including a "lofter" (7 iron) and a "cleek" (3 iron). Prices: The best examples are worth from $10,000 up to $300,000, depending on age, rarity and maker. You can, however, find good collectible examples for less, such as a circa-1850 long-nose putter by McEwan for $1,895.

Thanks for inspiring me to look it up!

Lu: Two of our suburban areas actually went up in value while most went down. Location can be crucial in a down market.

Eleanor: I'll email you directly, sounds like you bypassed the "Road show" but got your answer anyway.
